• I was thinking about this on my ride in this morning. I think that integration, where motor traffic is slowed down to enable cyclists to mix more safely is the way to go. The benefits of slower traffic are there for pedestrians too. And indeed for motorists - if traffic is restricted to a slower speed, within reason - it increases the carrying capacity of the road in terms of vehicles per hour. That is why they have those 50mph restrictions on the M25 at busy times, it actually increases the overall throughput. So in the end everyone is going to get places more safely and more quickly or at least as quickly.

    but the main advantage is in safety terms.

    less speed equals less crashes (more time to adjust).

    less speed equals less damage when crashes do happen.

    benefits are for peds, riders and people who decide to use motor powered vehicles.

    roll on 20 mph. the idea is for all village, town and city centres. worldwide :-)
