When you say you're a bit of a weight freak, do you mean that you love cake?

If thats the frame on ebay at the moment you know its a 62.5 seattube?
-
• #6
Yeah, I was aware of that, even if I find it actually uncomfortably large I can just sell it on :)

Chain tensioner for sale

I found a Surley Singleator for a fiver on ebay, that is apparently the best.
What frame would you guys recommend? The Excalibur is gonna end up quite expensive and it is big.
Thanks again guys -

What kind of riding will you do on the bike and how tall are you?
-
• #10
Just normal getting around/exercise, nothing too strenuous really.
I'm 5'10/11 -

I'm planning on getting an unbelievably nice bike though and keeping it for many many years, so I'm looking to invest a good amount.

Unbelievably nice can translate to different things. It depends on what your priorities are and isn't determined only by how much money you invest. Consider motor vehicles, you could spend 100 k and end up with a ferrari when actually you wanted a winnibago, or vice versa.

Fair enough, I'm looking to build a preferably sub 9kg single speed, not vintage, more modern style. Money is obviously a factor as I'm not rich haha.

Ebay frame for a fiver sounds a good start.
Erm, how old are you before we give you nuggets of wisdom?
What type of riding will you be doing ?

The Singleator is a chain tensioner, not a frame dude :P
I'm 18
Just road riding/racing, I tend to ride quite a lot each day just commuting as my group of friends all have really nice bikes as well and we get around -

why single-speed over fixed? you won't need a chain tensioner if you buy a frame with horizontal dropouts, this could be a new mass market track frame drilled for both brakes or a conversion from ebay, gumtree or the classifieds on here.

• #17
Get the right size. 62cm is probably a no-no, unless you are weirdly sized.
-
• #18
Well good luck. Don't forget to budget for a couple of good locks.
I stand corrected about the tensioner.
-
• #19
Yeah, ideally I'll get horizontal drop outs but the tensioner is for verticals. Also, I've heard you can't run fixed with a chain tensioner, as soon as you start backpedalling it just pops out people say.
I say single speed but a flip flop hub would be very awesome and not that hard. I say single though because then I can also get a nice frame with verticals. -

Personally I think a chain tensioner ruins the minimal look of a fixed/ss. there's a lot of choice for great frames with horizontal dropouts should you decide to go geared in the future or just go for a track frame. Seriously dude I doubt you'd want to go back to geared after trying fixed!

It's not the first fixie/ss I've ridden, I've been riding them for a few years :P

So thought I'd revive this thread because what is says at the top is what I'm doing.
So far this is as far as I've got:
Frame Tokyo fixed (I think anyway), in decent nick, very little wrong with it, and dropouts the right way round. Check.
Saddle, seat post, forks, bottom bracket, headsetAlthough I'll have the bottom bracket out as it feels like it might need some love (but I'm not basing that on any form of experience), and want to powder coat the frame so will prob chem strip it, bead blast it and then away.
I've heard some stories about powder coating and water capillarying underneath etc. but I'm sure that there are so many ways of skinning etc...
Then back for some more 'me' time.
Any advice for first project?

this whole thread is a huge troll?

Unfortunately my post wasn't so I'd better bu**er off and start my own thread somewhere else.
Hey guys, I'm looking to build a single speed as my Genesis Skyline got stolen a couple of days ago. Got any recommendations for certain parts? I am a bit of a weight freak if I'm honest and I have found a Ridley Excalibur, I realise I'm gonna need a chain tensioner, which ones are good?
Thanks a load guys!
