For Sale: Wooden Handlebars

  • To fund my next project, I'm offering these wooden bars for sale. (Bike not included)

I made them myself from 8 plys of laminated ash and have been riding them regularly for about a year. Ash is the same timber that cricket bats are made from, and the laminated construction makes for a strong bar.

These are very light (it will surprise you) and have a wonderful grain. They also feel amazing in the hands and being made of wood, are fantastic at absorbing vibration.

The bars are in great condition with some minor marks from the stem and levers. These can be sanded out if so desired, but I see no need for this. The ends of the bars have not suffered any crash damage and the laminate is still strong with no splintering or other damage. The bars have been finished with linseed oil and will benefit from an extra coat every now and again, especially in winter. If you were wondering, linseed oil is very easy and inexpensive to come by!

Because of the time invested in these, I'm looking for serious offers around £70. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

    Thanks,

    Nick

  • Cricket bats are made out of Willow.

Nice bars though. If they were drops I would definitely be interested

  • Trade?

  • Thanks for the correction adroit. I can make great wooden bars but clearly would not make a good pub quiz member.

Due to the lamination process and the nature of wood grain, a compound curve is very difficult to achieve making drops pretty hard to construct. If I ever get around to trying, I'll let you know!

  • Asche is the old-English for spear as it is a very straight-growing wood that was its use. I think they also used it for longbows

  • English longbow makers used Yew, ash was only rarely used and never for bows to be used in battle

  • Hi. My dad makes wooden handlebars with drops, if I understand what you intend with drops. They are made of different layers of oak wood and/or walnut wood and can have a layer of metal too. Let me know if you are interested and I can send you pictures, they are really cool! (he lives in Milan and has been inspired from some really cool shops there)

  • putting some pictures up would be awesome

  • let's see some pics of these wooden drops please!
