File them out/down mate, I've done it loads of times on older frames. Cheapo set of files from the pound shop will work if not as good as a proper set. the one with the rounded edge works best :o)

That's an intriguing idea. I assume that you mean file out the bottom of oval shaped cutout through which the brake block is bolted?

Yup, I've gone down a good 3-4mm

I got the file this lunchtime Mr. Bump. But there is no photo in your post.... I would like to see it too. 3-4 mil is what I got to do I think.

I've not had any issues with it and it's on a late 50s 531 Carlton, given it's a rear you're only going to be applying about 30% of the total braking force on it in any case.
It'll take you a load of time doing it, if you can find someone to lathe it that would save you heaps.

Yay. Did it last night. I bought a round file which was pretty much the same width/radius as the slot, and so it was easy to just file in one direction to lengthen the hole - no shaping required. Took about thirty minutes, excluding the time I spent explaining to my wife what I was doing. Looks ace, I will post some pics in the CP thread I have for this bike. And it works - an extra 3-4mm was all I needed and the blocks are bang on the rim. Thanks, have some rep.

Result :o)
Hi there. I have a pair of Simano 4500s fitted, but the rear is too short - by about a millimetre. I have moved the blocks right down the slider, but it just won't reach. So, I was wondering if anyone had a R451, which is the long drop version, or something else Shimano so that I could keep it looking matchy matchy? Willing to collect and pay of course.
This is perfect, but the 'Bay has had enough of my money recently: Ebay link
