Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • You can get heavy duty cables I believe, alternatively just do what I do and use a cheap, short extension so you don't damage the jack on the actual AKG cable with roughhousing...

  • Can you get a good pair of wireless headphones under £50? I know nothing of the technology, would there potentially be any lag? I intend to use them for gaming and playing my electric guitar.

  • TM: Was hoping I could get something frankensteined with an L shaped jack on the mp3 player side so it sits better in my pocket. I've seen plenty of hacked/modded headphone cables (with iphone remotes on them etc) for other cans but I can see the problem being the proprietary jack that goes into the headphone itself.

the world of cables is your oyster...

I just use a sony mini jack extension with aforementioned 90* jack....

  • Bose products are well overpriced it's true - mainly sold to people walking in off the street in John Lewis - natch

only ever buy whatever I feel like off the shelf in john lewis-
    problem?

  • Try the previous incarnation: AKG K450
    ...

Saw this, got some today - they are very good. Thanks.

  • Anyone recommend anything like those AKG 451's up there but for more like £30-40?

urban ears plattan can be picked up for £38. awesome headphone for the money - minimal design, great sound and functions with mic, remote and a socket for someone else to plug into. look no further.

i think good wireless headphones is an oxymoron. i looked at a lot before chrimbo. tested the dr dre beats wireless and the sound was seriously shit compared to non-wireless.

  • so, a week with my AKGs and already I'm contemplating my next step up for home listening. Im thinking Grados, based on all the superbly positive reviews.

Bare in mind that at the moment the best I have in terms of input are flac files fed from either my powerbook or iphone.

Between the sr60i and sr80i there is about £12 quid, am I right in thinking the upgrade is a nobrainer?

Any other suggested rivals at the 100 quid price point?

They actually look ace. Can anyone else vouch for the sound? I don't distrust you but I always insist on a second opinion after it turned out my hemorrhoids were just a lump of melted Blackpool rock I'd sat on.

  • Look like Wesc headphones...

  • ..but better.

  • Wesc's actually look alright IMO, but I want a decent headphone from an pucka company not some flap of pink fashion plastic draped over my head

Sound quality is more wooden with the SR80 than the SR60*

*or it could be in my head, if you never had a grado, you'll be very happy with the SR60 TBH.

  • Probably bringing Burger King content to a Michelin Star equivalent audiophile discussion, however was very happy with my old Sony whatever Earbuds until I snagged the cable and lost the audio on one side.

Just picked up some Marley Revolutions for 40 notes and first impressions (via a well produced Laura Veirs album playing on my HTC) is they're a v.nice replacement.

I'd suggest you definitely try some (any) Grados before you hand over any cash. They aren't for everyone, a lot of people find them treble-excessive.

  • Having read a couple of reviews and seen that a new improved version has just been launched (see here http://www.aftershokz.co.uk/product-p/as320.htm), I am thinking of getting a pair. I would love to be able to listen to my music whilst riding (mainly in the Yorkshire countryside). Anyone with experience? Are they any good and are they safe?

    Cheers

  • No, but they look interesting.

let me know how you get on with them if you do buy them.

  • ooh these look pretty interesting.

  • These things sound tinny as fuck.

Just get some half decent open backed headphones which don't block external sounds, neckband style if you want to wear a helmet, don't turn it up too loud and use your bloody eyes.

  • A friend showed me a way of avoiding tangle hell when you store your earbuds away – instead of winding the cable up in a loop, hold one hand like you're doing the metal sign (forefinger and little finger up) and wrap the cable in a figure-of-eight around those fingers, finishing with a few wraps around the middle. It works incredibly well.

  • I'm riding with urban ears plattan on my ears. But I only use one of them, so I can hear the lovely sound of the other traffic.

  • ^^

  • I use these, ACS custom earbuds, and in ear monitors held in place with Sugru (the yellow)

They exclude a lot of (i.e. almost all) external sound, and I got them to use when I need ear defenders. I can have the sound turned down really low and still hear the music perfectly, but I still tend to use them at 11
    Not advisable for cycling!
