Chainring bolt missing - ok to ride?

Posted on
  • One of my chainring bolts has broken and I want to ride to get a replacement (7 miles). I've not done this before and have read elsewhere that it could damage the ring through stresses, but I figured a short ride won't kill it. Or would it?

  • I couriered through the whole of November - c. 1150 miles -just gone with a bolt missing and two others the wrong size (double rather than single) without event. While I wouldn't recommend it, checking regularly that it's still all tight and not smashing the bike around too much you should be fine. IMO.

  • That's good to know, thanks!

  • My bike has had a chainring bolt missing since it was build because I'm too cheap to buy single ring specific bolts, it's not ideal I'm sure but I haven't had any problems.

Just make sure the rest are nice and tight.

  • I've Had the same problem, one of mine fell out, but ive been riding for a few months now, and aslong as i tightened the remaining 4 bolts up every now and again, it was fine.

  • Eventually the spider snaps - True story.

  • Don't lean.
