Bikes have always been targets for thieves. Cyclists are more likely to have their bikes stolen than motorcyclists or car owners. Last year over 500,000 bikes were stolen in the UK (one each minute), with a recovery rate of under 5 per cent. It has been estimated that of the 17 per cent of cyclists that experience bicycle theft, 66 per cent cycle less often and 24 per cent stop altogether.
The Hands Off My Bike Challenge Prize is calling on people from all over the UK to come up with breakthrough innovations to make it more difficult to steal bikes and have the potential to increase numbers of people cycling in the UK.
The winning innovation will be the one that requires the longest time to steal the bike. The innovation will be also judged on the impact on the environment, cost and potential for commercialisation and/or implementation at scale.
The winner will receive a prize of £50,000. Entries must be in by 18/1/13

87% of people who have had a bike stolen are either a numpty, tight in the extreme or a weight-weeny and hence don't buy a d-lock.

So education then..... Or is it genetic

I think there's a strong causal link. Urban cyclists are way more likely to be tight (not necessarily poor) as riding bikes is cheaper than any other mode of transport.
They're also more likely to be delusional hippies who can't imagine that anyone would take their beloved bike, and so they just assume a cable lock will be fine. Or a bit of string. Or nothing at all.
Car drivers on the other hand are misanthropic individualists with money who assume every person on the street is a crackwhore and so their car needs an alarm, immobiliser, steering wheel lock and preferably those side afterburners they use in South Africa to barbecue car-jackers.
IMO...

Focale 44 Polo Bike saga continues... They have made an offer... Can £150 sort the wheels and sprocket?
Hey Lucas,
Thanks for your email. For some reason the email sent via our site did not come trough to us. We are now looking into why this has happened.
Sorry to hear you have had problems with some of the components on the Focale44 Polo bike. We have never had any problems with it before.
Can I suggest a partial credit? We can refund £150 of the price paid reducing the bike cost to £350. This should be plenty enough to upgrade the front wheel, sprocket and chain.
We return to the office on Wednesday 2nd Jan. We will get this sorted for you then. Many thanks
Regards,
Aaron Bellerby

Hmm, you could probably get stuff 2nd hand for that much.

How much for a decent set of wheels? The sprocket should be a cheap find.

IME the Halo wheels are a bit shit. Mine kept buckling and I broke the axle. The brake surface thing isn't an issue - just get the anodised ones, not the painted ones.
Most 700c traditionalist/new wave returnees seem to use velocity rims, chukkers I think. But you've going to need new spokes and it would be stupid to persist with your current hubs, so hubs too, which will probably come to over £200...

Put a golf grip on my mallet and it feels great. I trimmed it a bit as I only use one hand on the mallet. Can't wait to try on Sunday.
Should be in. You got any pics of the new setup? Had a chance to give it a spin?
