Wanted: First Single Speed

  • Hi,

Am after my first single speed and looking for anything ready to go.

Am 6'1" and have tried a Charge in medium and it was fine, large seemed too big IMO. Tempted by Wiggle's current offer of a Charge Racer @ £300 but would like to spend less on a second hand one to start with and see how i get on. Unsure of the Racer's handlebars as well.

Will consider anything but can only pick up from the London area. Am based in Kentish Town.

  • secondhand fuji track and you won't put a foot wrong (I'm on the lookout for one too if anyone has a 61cm)

  • If you like the bike apart from the bars I wouldn't let them put you off too much - as far as I'm aware all the Charge Plugs are pretty much the same apart from the bars and the wheels, and bullhorns/flats/risers needn't cost a lot to replace.

  • Hi there,

My work is running a cycle to work scheme, and I'd like to buy my first single-speed through the scheme. I previously had a hybrid, which I found heavy, sluggish and frankly a bit embarrassing to ride!

I've set myself a budget of £600. I have no experience of building my own bike so would like to buy a complete bike for my first time. Is it possible to get a decent-ish bike for this money and, if so, can anyone recommend which one I should get?

    Many thanks in advance.

  • You can certainly get a decent commuter within that budget. Can you be a little more specific about you requirements e.g. do you need panniers/rack bags, fenders and so on, or are you looking for something a little more hipster or sporty?

  • I'd be looking to use it to commute to work and back, so the option to have panniers would be great, but not essential as I'm happy to strap a bag across my back. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want a bike that looked good, so sporty would be nice. Not sure what a hipster bike would be though.

  • Just realised that you've posted under "Classifieds", which of course is intended for peer-to-peer sales. Are you actually looking to buy second-hand - reading between the lines, the wording of your post seems to suggest otherwise? If not you may want to consider posting in the "Bikes and Bits" forum.

If you are looking to buy second-hand, do some homework first; chances are that sellers i.e. the primary users of this forum will recommend whatever they're selling, rather than what you need.

  • Got this: http://www.lfgss.com/thread98875.html

Served me perfectly as my first single speed/fixed gear. 58cm, I'm 6ft 1 so should be ideal size.

Let me know if you're interested.

  • Hi, yes sorry for posting here, but as a new user I can't start a new thread and this one seemed most relevant to my question.

I'll try posting in Bikes and Bits tomorrow when I have full rights to post.

  • here's a list that should help you make a few choices http://www.lfgss.com/thread9085.html, make a list, narrow it down and then come back for more advice if you need it.

  • Brilliant. This is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Many thanks for your help.

    ^This.

    Also consider the following points:

    1) Check out the site guidelines and the nursery for new members.

    2) Search the site in general - tons of great info absolutely free.

    3) Always check for relevant existing threads before posting a new one.

    4) Do a quick Google search. Offers are constantly changing and there's literally hundreds of great offers to be had out there, particularly this time of year.

    5) Consult your local bike shop if applicable. You will need a point of reference regarding price, quality and so on, hence I recommend you do some homework before doing so.

    6) As already implied, do some research and post a link or two to something you like, or are considering, or you want fellow members to comment on. It's difficult to give advise, based on sparse information you provide here.

    7) Always bare in mind that LFGSS is not your personal Googling service. Most forum members are happy to help, but like to see you doing some of the basic groundwork yourself, taking advantage of existing recourses and so on before asking questions, that might already have been answered.

    8) Also you need to consider if £600 is really your budget! Do you need any extras e.g.lock, pump, spare tube, repair kit, tools, clothing etc.? As a rule of thumb think of a realistic budget and then double it; particularly if you're starting from scratch. Evidently you've got previous experience, so this might not be an issue, but definitely something to think about.

I'm a newbie myself by the way... Well to LFGSS anyway; welcome onboard.
