I like that pneumatic tyres require regular upkeep, they force you to maintain constant hands-on attention to your bike, whether you DIY or take it to a shop. How many times have you patched a tube and then noticed something else on the bike needs attention? I also feel like fixing punctures and changing tubes/tyres is a great introduction to bike maintenance. Not to mention punctures being an indication of riding too close to the curb!
It could be possible to adjust 'pressure', but you'd need some kind of expensive/heavy/complicated mechanism that adjusts the pre-load on the 'spokes' of the tyre.
Come back to this in a hundred years and we might have something useful.
