  • After 5 months, my Shimano SS freewheel has given up, so yeh, what should i replace it with?

Evans has 'Sprint Sprint' wheels for £5- is that too good to be true? Given the £25 Shimano price tag?

I put in 200-300km a week on the thing, and also use it for triathlons (so cant just run it fixed).

    Any ideas?

  • ACS claws are pretty good and not expensive, White are brill, but pricey. Given your mileage, White might be a good investment.

  • If you can't afford White Industries get the Halo Clickster. Its brilliant. £40. Much better than the Shimano one imo.

  • I have one of these on my winter bike

Not as good as the WI I have but still feels solid, better than dicta etc and hasn't slipped once so far with 100+k a week in wet and salty conditions

  • Only one option. White Industry. Pricey but best value out there.

  • ^yep, White Industry, I have been running one since 2006, SS off road.

  • +1 on WI

  • thing is, theyre not 65 - 70 quid. theyre more like 100. http://www.sidewayscycles.co.uk/products/index.php?id=122&clid=12

worth the dollar though they be.

  • Hmm... in fairness to Sideways they are charging £69 ^

I bought one from these guys though...

    http://www.bikechase.co.uk/index.php?p=174442&o=176521

    £59.99 with free shipping...

  • he means that you have to get a special tool if you want to remove it at some point.

  • ah fair enough, sorry. Although a screwdriver and a hammer will do... ;)

  • So i cant just use a normal freewheel tool to remove a WI one?

Anyone else have experience with the Sturmey Archer one?

My Shimano one was skip free every day, until the day it died (the day after i gave it a good clean, could that be something to do with it?)

  • you can use a cheaper tool on the eno, but it will damage the freewheel and probably break before you get the freewheel off.

  • Looks like level hubs are going to manufacture their freewheel that the whole system was meant to have from the off but was too expensive to mass produce. Not sure how easy will (hub jub) is to get hold of for his opinion now but i know he was one of a select few that got one of the prototypes.

  • Another vote for White Industries. Had one on my only bike for 2.5 years used through all weathers and when I removed it (with a standard removal tool) it was as solid and span as well as when it was brand new.
The quicker pickup and less knocking and banging are worth it alone as even when a cheap freewheel is brand new it is not great.

  • Yeah the quicker pick up is a real virtue too. The engagement is almost instantaneous, and worth the dollar on its own, that and the lovely subtle ratcheting sound.
And I have never taken mine off, although I do have the very redundant tool!

  • Another +1 for WI. One of the few bits of kit I've had where the product really did match the hype.

  • you guys have sold it :) thanks for the advice

  • The cheaper BMX freewheel is better than the Shimano for the money.

But White Industries as other stated, as the Phil Woods of freewheel.

  • If you can't afford White Industries get the Halo Clickster. Its brilliant. £40. Much better than the Shimano one imo.

yeah Halo Clickster is in reasonable price, and good quality though

  • ive just bought an preloved WI 17t from the classifieds here

and a Cyclo 4-prong remover, which im assured works, seems fits better than the Icetools 4prong BMX anyway

tho since ive also bought a 22t chainring for it, im considering the 33gbp proper tool for it from sideways

i fully intend to get a 20t for it ... after i get a bit fitter tho

    i replaced my well-worn+reversed TA 50t front ring with a 44t TA 1/8"

just waiting now for an injustible pin-spanner [*red* one is recommended]

  • i HAD been considering a Token sealedbearing freewheel ..

their pawls are directly underneath the teeth, unlike the offset-pawls on WI

  • Mario here has 70s NOS single freewheels
    http://www.defietsenmaker.nl/index.php?item=regina-single-speed-freewheel-16t_&action=article&group_id=10000052&aid=1862&lang=EN
**Regina single speed freewheel 16t .. 1/8" chainfit

EDIT: drawback is -- u need to take it to clapham cycles to remove it
    **

  • some White Ind porn

    debuild unstructions

    vertically stacked

Cyclo BMX remover -- fits ok, better than icetools one

pawls inside the 22t ring i intend to swap in

    flatstacked

  • I ended up with a WI in the end, and have worn out the teeth... £35 for a 16t replacement though... ouch
