Which dropbar for street use?

Posted on
  • Looking for a decent dropbar for street use. I ride a Surly Steamroller and used both a Nitto RB-021 bullhorn as well as a Crankbrothers Cobalt riser so far.

Sold my Pre Cursa lately and want to make my Surly Steamroller a comfortable commuter as well as a nice bike for evening sprints for about 10-20 miles through the city. I guess a dropbar would fit best as it offers a lot of riding positions.

I like Nitto but wouldnt mind changing to another brand as long as it offers really good quality. Currently I got those three Nittos in my mind:

    B-123AA
    B-125AA
ADB-X (looks really sweet but I doubt it rides as good as it looks!?

Some people say those track bars arent as comfortable as road dropbars, what are your opinions and could you suggest any good road dropbars?

  • I rate compact drops with 2 hood brake leavers. I'm running some cheap FSA ones. There's a thread somewhere that deals with handle bars and here's a link out there to a site with a break down of the various sizes.

I think you get used to most bar set ups. I have some large noddles and old fashioned shimano levers on one bike as well as compacts and slightly more modern tektros.

Overall tho I prefer compacts, because of the short resch and as I like to be able to have good visability even when in the drops.

  • ^^ merge into which thread?

I had a quick search and couldn't find any sensible obvious threads.

  • hm... maybe here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread5186.html

you're right, nothing obvious. just seems that "which drop bars should I use" would have been covered x100

  • Yeah I agree.

It's one of those frustrating topics that gets dealt with well in random threads. I have a specific thread in my head but can't for the life of me find it.

Anyway @ the OP - just buy some FSA omegas and see how you get on with compact bars.

  • I thought there was only one answer: spatr bars

  • He's got a steamroller so there's no reason to be forced into bar choices because of an awkward and out-dated measurement(s).

    ;)

  • Just to make it clear: I used the thread- and post-search but didn`t find a proper thread.

Thanks for the link about road bar geometry! What are your experiences with the mentioned drop bars?

  • I used track drops for a while and, although they looked great, they were never comfortable and after a while began to kill my wrists. The drops were far too deep to ever ride on them outside of a very short sprint.

One thing to think about is if you're running a brake and what lever you're using.

I'd go for something ergo and compact. I like the RaceFace Cadence, for example.

  • I either ride a bike mounted on top position or no brake
