Brighton Bike Polo needs your help

  • Hi people,
Brighton polo is looking for a winter court to play on,around the size of a 5 a side football pitch with floodlights, obviously we have looked at all the obvious options but we seem to getting nowhere at the moment.
    places we have looked at/looking into are;
    moulescoomb courts
    tarner courts
    withdean courts
    brighton uni courts
    shoreham roller derby space
preston park with a generator and our own lights.
    lewes rd football court
If you live by and/or know somewhere where we could play for around 3 hours on a weekday evening with lights then please could you let us know, we can travel anywhere in brighton and to a certain extent just outside, maybe 4miles from the city centre, we can also pay a little cash monies if necessary, please let us know even if it may seem a little ridiculous it may be just the place we are looking for.
    thanks
    chris

  • Why aren't these places working for you?

    Cost? Availability? Distance?

I'd have thought that they Roller Disco place in Shoreham was ideal? Ask to speak with Andy if you're not getting anywhere with them.

Have a look at Westows in Hove: http://www.westows.com/

The Haunt in Poole Valley? Or any other largish club venue that doesn't have pillars

LA fitness in Hove has outdoor hard tennis courts - floodlights too I think

Tried any schools - Blatchington Mill has a couple of large indoor sports halls, they have also just put astro turf pitches out front, again I think with lights

There's a social club of some description that backs onto the Hove train line, by Wickes if I recall, have no idea what its called but they have loads of grassed space and possibly lights

Wish Park is flat but no lights.

There are tennis courts on Hove lawns, not sure if they have lights or not.

St Annes Well Gardens - tennis courts, not sure about lights.

Brighton Marina Car park - on the roof?

There's a place in Portslade/Hangleton that's does night school classes - they have flood lit football pitches, can't remember what its called.

The bike track in Preston Park - they have lights don't they?

Brighton Rugby club have floodlights and loads of space - Waterhall Road

Black Rock - bring your own lights.

Car park at B&H Albion - they have lights.

Have you spoken to the council? they might be able to help, in fact they might want to help given that is a sport.

Hope that helps, I'll think some more and report back if I come up with anything else.

    Good luck!

  • Sorry I should've mentioned we play on Tarmac not grass and it needs a perimeter fence/board ideally but there seems to definitely be some places in that list that we could try,
Regarding shoreham I think it was quite expensive to hire for us IIRC and hasn't it closed down now? If it hasn't then we can revisit & see if we can work something out.
The main problem we encounter is that people think that we are going to ruin their courts and are worried about the health and safety aspect. This happened at withdean even though I offered that we maintain the court to a higher standard than it was already at ( it was poorly maintained) & all sign disclaimers etc.
Brighton Guzzi thanks you've given us lots of places to look into.

  • Shoreham is still open, I went roller skating there this Sunday!

Its now at the old Sorting Office on the coast road - link: http://www.gysodisco.co.uk/

    Good luck!

  • shoreham was too expensive, the court was massive and they didn't really have any weekly slots that would have worked for us IIRC.

Asking the council is a good idea, has anyone ever asked them before? they should have a list of all their facilities.
also, are the courts at Varndean, or hidden behind Stringer floodlit? I don't mind approaching Stringer if so, as an ex pupil

  • or the tennis courts at Hollingbury park may be lit? i doubt there's much tennis their during the winter, we would just need boards to put up between the courts, we do it in Van and it's fine

  • Have you scoped out the car park behind rayment cycles? , well lit and closed to
    Cars....

  • if you look on google earth BN2 5QW, should show you a place in whitehawk, theres some fenced and floodlit courts there.

  • Where is that? That looks awesome!

  • Ahhh ok just found it on google maps, are they owned by city college? If they are I know someone who works there!
