the fork tube is stamped 1998, so I think 7700 would be 'period correct'

Just wondering why this was given a steel fork, rather than carbon...?

I would have thought aluminium, Cannondale being all 'advanced' with that material and whatnot

I don't get it, you dibs & undibs within 5 minutes? Proves the worth of said system once again. Or do you mean your dibs is dibs not potential dibs? Oh well.. Just answered your pm anyway.
this frameset takes a 1" threaded headset

The fork is interesting, maybe in 1998 steel was viewed (or understood) as being better for soaking up road noise.
For no other reason than my own prejudice I would rather trust a steel fork of this age than a cf one.

I've never ridden a full aluminium f&f, but I imagine things could get bumpy with stiff wheels and 8.5 bar pressure in the tyres
About your inhibitions concerning cf, this aluminium/cf C4 frameset (now on ebay) with carbon fiber fork did just fine for me last year, vintage carbon, built up after 14 years :-)

Cannondale caad2 Saeco colours aluminium frame with steel fork for the taller gents. Superb condition, hardly a scratch on the bright red paint. There's a bit of aluminium corrosion underneath the paint on the driveside chainstay.
