Questions regarding seatbolts and BB's

Posted on
  • Hi all, just a little help and advice please. I find reading from calculations and charts very hard to take in. I have done research and read S.B's website, but I'm still confused. I am ok with restoring original, but when it comes to fitting new bits I'm clueless!

Currently building up a beater, Raleigh Banana. I also have a few other Raleigh frames which I'd like to build up, but I'm not sure what seatpost pin I need? I've tried my 19mm Campagnolo one doesn't even go through the holes. Which one do I need?

I also need to fit a BB to the frame. I've had it sand-blasted and powder-coated and some of the thread has been removed from the BB, plus some extra paint is on there. Guessing I need some sort of tool to fix it? I would like to get my tool chest up, so I don't mind investing in the parts. Also same thing with the seatpost but the paint has gone quite far down, guessing it's just a case of sanding it down inside?

My next problem is I have a seatpost which has an awful 'etc' logo on it. I've tried thinners and it hasn't taken it off. I did think of using scotch-bright but feared this might take away the shine from the post? It is a turned aluminium post if that makes any sense.

My next problem is BB sizing. I know how to measure the size for the BB shell, but not sure what axle size I need. How do I go about working this out?

    James

  • Find a normal nut and bolt.
    Chase threads.
    Sandpaper and polish

  • Bb she'll will be 68 mm

  • Only have time to answer 1 question, seatpost is anodized, use p2000 wet&dry abrasive sheets and some soap on the logo, then some brasso. Sometimes the logo is still there but its barely noticable as its a different 'shade' of silver.

  • Bb she'll will be 68 mm

I want to use a nice flush pin.

I know it will be 68cm, but do I need 110 113 or 125 axle.

  • that depends on what cranks you use.
they will usually tell you when you buy them.
    eg:
    http://www.tokyofixedgear.com/products/50-Crank-Sets/3933-Andel---Classic-Track-Crankset---Polished-Silver/

this one takes a 110mm JIS bottom bracket.

    others will have other length

  • if some of the thread is damaged on the bb casing you may need to get the threads recut. i tried to recut them myself using the new bb and just stripped it (inexperience and stupidity combined). there's tools to do this but can quite expensive. bike shops generally charge 10 to 15 squids to do it for you. ask about.
