I'd recommend either BB7's or Hope.
BB7's are simple & effective. Hope spare parts are easy to get hold of + they're the easiest hydraulics to bleed ( imo )

the most recent XT brakes are great, previous ones not bad at all either
My decade-old BR-M755s are still going strong

Yeah, either of those work for me. Swinley is always better midweek anyway.

Some of us have jobs.
How about 24th? Burn some calories to make room for Christmas dinner, and put in your last bit of training for the Boxing Day 10

Hmmm, could be tempted by the 24th.

If any of you folks are interested i'm going to pop my 1989 Rockhopper Comp up for sale in the very near future to free up funds for my latest project. Will stick up some photos this evening.

Already put it up there a while back. A few people saying how nice it was and it was a bargain but no actual bites!

How muddy was it?

It was pretty good actually. Quite a few puddles but nothing major. I'll be on an orange Ragley

Swinley is very free-draining, being on sand ridges of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagshot_Formation so there isn't much mud. Mud would be nice compared with wet sand.
Not yet tried any of the sealed cables yet, got a set of Gusset compressionless cable (front & rear inners & outers) for £14 which was pretty awesome. There are no breaks in the cabling anyway on my MTB and the BB7s include some quite nice little seals for the cable end.
