  • Good enough to use as a distance/tourer?

Definitely, faster and as comfortable as a normal tourer.

  • look how well the seat post matches the box for the bb cups. these italians truly have a sense for style.

  • What else is going down on that worktop?

  • Amish lego set out to raise a barn, but lord amish delivered sweet carbon seatpost and record bb...

  • something like that. it's what happens when dad and son play together.

  • Everytime I see the cabling on the SRAM rear mech on cx bikes I wonder why more people don't use their MTB stuff

The only MTB rear mech optimised for road cassettes is the X0-DH, which is as expensive as Red. But for anybody using big sprockets, you're right that X7 or X9 makes more sense than the WiFli road derailleur.

  • Picked up the Witcomb on saturday.

Did not do much with it this WE, only put some wheels on to have a feel of the geometry, whatever bar and stem combo I had already set-up in the shed and a saddle to sit on it in my living room...

I also wirebrushed some areas to assess the extent of the rust and to try to read the serial number... Appart from the 8 and the 4, everything is pretty much unreadable... I think the rust damage is only an issue cosmetically, looking thru the BB shel, the inside of the tubes look very good / clean. Of course a very carefull inspection is due after sandblasting...

So far I like the project. And that seat clamp detail! OOh! Mama! Love it!

  • Oh and these tyres are 20c, I would probably use something bigger to fil the clearances... And yes, I know, it's a bit too small for me, but I know the set-up will be 100% comfy, and I will do whatever I can to make it look OK (will probably use 175mm cranks to insert more seatpost...

The brakes need 60mm drop. With that rear bridge detail, it screams for centre pull, and I have some old Mafac that should do just perfect for this...

  • ^ Nice. I have a NOS set of Shimano 500 centre-pulls if the Mafacs don't suit. 45-60mm drop. Although I'm not sure exactly how well they'd work with that cable guide. Ought to be fine.

Unrelated but it looks like you have a hohner accordion in your first photo, I had the same thing but the melodeon version, do you play?

  • Dura Ace centerpull would look awesome.

  • Picked up the Witcomb on saturday.

looks niiice. I reckon it is 86457, and its in the same place as mine so now the forum has two badly painted ratty red witcombs.

^ link to the good Kalloy stems sold on eBay.

Why didn't you just put a brake on the Cinelli?

    Well spotted!

I bought this in a flee market years ago, I was vaguely hoping to refurbish it, and maybe learn, never did it... In the meantime it looks nice in my house!

Can you teach accordion? Do you know how to "service" them?

Looking again, it could also be 67...

Any idea when cast steel campag dropouts where introduced? I'm pretty sure that's what is on that frame.

    L

  • The ones with the serrated upper edge were 50's, and the plain ones are from about 59/60ish onwards - which looks about right on that Witcomb.
Early '60's would be my guess

  • Picking up my altered forks for my 'Nag in 30 mins... excited...

  • Having recently finished bike number 5 I'm now thinking about bike number 6. I might of found something very unusual, think webbing.

  • you've stolen jakes spider web paintjob bike?

  • I dont think Nitto make a technomic stem long enough for me to use that frame.

  • New bike time!

Hate on the saddlebag and bottle/cage all you like - that's how I'm gonna ride it so that's how the bike looks (aside from another cage during the summer and long rides).

Still working on getting it all set up - I think I'm gonna end up with a shorter stem (maybe 100 vs the 110 that's on there now) and the saddle has gone up and back slightly since I took this. I have a proper bike fit session in a couple of weeks so I'm sort of holding out until then...

Bit late on this, but your front wheel is on the wrong way round. Good job though.
