Back in the 70's nostalgic sigh we only had wool,acrylic or nylon. No Lycra. Acrylic was cheap so we wore that. Unfortunately, once you start sweating the material gets sodden and uncomfortable. There was a reason why wool was more expensive, it was (and still is) better.
TBH, you're probably better off buying a modern Lycra jersey in a retro vintage design.
