Well, I know some of this won't go down well on this 'ere forum, but as you asked.
My opinion is:
Single speed is a no no on an MTB. It's just plain silly for off road. You need gears. Sorry.
29" wheels are a bit of a moot point but, personally, at the moment, 29" is not porn.
Aluminium is definitely out. Not porn at all. Steel, titanium or well engineered carbon it must be.
Correct geometry is a must, as is frame size. Any hard-tail with a seatpost with more than 330mm exposed is basically too small for the rider and not porn. Long stems can >>>> too.
Then it's just decent suspension forks, hydraulic disk brakes that aren't shit and top of the range componentry, of which there are many examples.
That's about it. Thanks for asking. So so wrong, on so many counts. If I'd known all this before my little search yesterday, I could have just directed you to bikeradar.

^ you clearly don't ride up/down mountains then.
Swinley Forest doesn't count.

I'm clearly no "mountain biker" then :'-(
How do you know whether any of my bikes have gears or 26" wheels, or even suspension? Or where I ride for that matter? It must surely have occurred to you that some people on this forum might like singlespeeds.
Swinley Forest doesn't count.
I've never been to Swinley Forest. I won't bother now, knowing what a crushing disappointment it would be.

What I said.
How am I wrong? I know some might disagree with me, which is what I said. I realise a lot of you like single speeds, dur. Which is why I said before you guys here don't have a clue about mtbs. ;)

How have I proved it. Go on explain it to me.
Proper MTBs need to be ridden down proper mountains.
-
• #70816
You say MTB, I say VTT, let's call the whole thing off. Every bike, including off road variants, should offer the best compromise of qualities to suit the terrain. For some people on some trails, that might be a rigid SS 29er

"Mountain Bike" is a North American designation for a bike style that was first commercialized around the Northern California area.
