    Good album.

  • Deftones - Koi no yokan

I hadn't heard this, so I have been listening over the last few days - yes very very good (and its not really even my kind of music)

  • Was getting pretty raged at the comment section of the Guardians AOTY 20-11, they mostly came in three flavours:

    1. "Modern music is shit" (wrong, you just don't look hard enough)

    2. "Taylor Swift?? Oh how eclectic!" (Good music's good music, Girls Aloud released one of THE great pop songs in my opinion, they just happen to be on Radio One and the cover of Smash Hits)

    3. "Load of indie rubbish, the best albums this year have been by Soundgarden, Deftones and Muse" (Opinion, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Kerrang AOTY a lot more chap)

  • I'm quite surprised to see Flying Lotus near the top of a lot of these. I thought it was a bit of a miss, maybe i need to spend more time with it.

I have rediscovered the Laurel Halo album this last week and have been enjoying the tallest man on earth's commercial breakthrough which i'd initially avoided.

  • agree about Girls Aloud - Sugababes had a brilliant song too - still say Toxic by Spears is one of the greatest pop records ever made

  • There was a very good article about Pop music by panel in the New Yorker earlier in the year.

“You’ve got to have a hook in the intro, a hook in the pre-chorus, a hook in the chorus, and a hook in the bridge.”

Finally listened to it this weekend. It's good. Definite +1 from me.

Well crafted pop is a joy, and people can be too sniffy about it.
Toxic is written by Cathy Dennis, who is a supremely talented songwriter, and not a bad singer either - she did most of the vocals on the Spears track!

Girls Aloud songs are almost all written by the secretive Xenomania partnership, who are like a creative agency for writing hit pop songs. You wouldn't believe the number of top ten hits they have written.

and I don't care if it's not cool to like it on this forum, the new Muse album is one of the best records I have heard this year. I've checked out some of the earlier suggestions in this thread, and most of them have been fucking awful. That Guardian list was shite.

So apart from Muse, I particularly liked
Richard Hawley - Standing at the Sky's Edge
The Shins - Port of Morrow
    and of course
    New Cassettes - Winterhead

  • My final list was:

    1. The Raveonettes - Observator
    2. Wild Nothing - Nocturne
    3. TOY - Toy
    4. Beat Connection - The Palace Garden
    5. Prince Rama - Top Ten Hits of the End of the World
    6. Chain and the Gang - In Cool Blood
    7. Blanck Mass - White Math/Polymorph
    8. Cliff Martinez - Contagion OST
    9. DIIV - Oshin
    10. Emeralds - Just To Feel Anything
    11. The Smashing Pumpkins - Oceana
