what gear you ride offroad?
-
• #3278
Anything around 55-65GI works pretty well for me. Entered in my first race and forgot to tke spare sprockets so was riding around on my road gearing of 68GI for 7 hours! Around 66/67 or so now though, 36/16.

I run 55" ( 36/19 ) I like the extra security of a larger cog when grinding out of the saddle.
Unlike mmccarthy, I am not composed of a mixture of EPO & helium :-(

ah cool..
this is set up as 44x18 (70.7GI with 50-622 wheels) at the moment which is fine for city bruising but effort offroad! seller gave me a 32t ring (51.4GI with 50-622 wheels) and a bashguard as well, so may fit those and take for a spin too...

Give it a go. Much like on the road, it takes a little while to sort your preferred GI.
The Kona rear wheel has a mini freehub design, rather than a freewheel doesn't it? ( that might just be the more recent models ) If so, there's plenty of cheap cogs to experiment with.
-
• #3282
yes it does... mini freehub that takes cog/lockring..
could I run a 3/32" double cog? like a surly dingle? or would that be a problem for chainline?

what gear you ride offroad?
Depends on person and terrain. But the stock answer is..
26" = 32:16
29" = 32:18I ride 56 GI. But I have some massive climbs on my usual routes.
-
• #3284
I don't know the exact spacing on the dingle? I would have thought 2 separate cogs & a mix of narrow spacers ( like the Velosolo ones ) would help you dial the chainline in pretty well.

• #3285
^^ Ah, you're back furry! I can go home now ;-)

• #3286
If you're going to run a double apollo, then I'd recommend finding a combo that gives you no larger than a 40t big ring. I like to have the extra ground clearance & find 44t a bit of a pain.

I'd like to run the 32t with the bashguard all the time and have a 18t/14t double. don't think they exist though...
-
• #3289
You can get bigger bashguards. Mine is meant to be 34t max. It fits a 36t perfectly.
-
• #3290
Glad to hear you've been out on it already apollo! I've definetly got a 16t and 18t you can have too and probably the required spacer.
-
• #3291
^^ These guys do loads of different sizes at a decent price.

I've definitely ridden it more than any of my other bikes over the last few days!!
I sorted the front wheel out, the rear will need trueing at some point, and I still need to dial in the calipers, but other than that it's an absolute blast!
Let me know what we're going to do with the seatpost clamp... I measured it it is 30mm dead. do you have a spare lying around?
-
• #3293
I don't but i'll get one sorted for you. do you want the other cogs for the rear?

I have a blue HopeTech bolt one, that I bought for the fat bike, before finding out it'll have a 35mm seattube. Like the one below. I've unpacked it but its unused.

• #3295
also, do you want QR or allen bolt?

how much do you want for that?
-
• #3297
^^^thanks for the offer, but I'd rather stick with black
^^not sure!! you said the seatpost slipped with QR?
-
• #3298
no sorry, i meant the seatpost in my Kilauea slipped with that allen bolt one which is now on your unit. that's why i bought the hope one for the Kilauea but I had it on the Unit for a while (hence the photos).
The only reason I want to keep the allen bolt one is that it's the original for the Kilauea. -

I've started 'optimising' my 29er. I calculated its around 8.5Kg. Which is bonkers light. So I'd like to get it down to 8.5Kg actual weight.
My stem and bars are heavy, but they are also awesome (could get carbon version).
The big saving will be in the crank arms, which have a steel axle.
I like the width of my Velocity blunt rims. I will strip and plasi-coat them black over the winter (I have some carbon rims bookmarked, but dont want to divert bike budget from the fatbike).
I will add a lighter rear tyre.
I have a load of Ti bolts lying around from other projects, so they will go on.
I'm taking my bar-ends off, and have some lighter grips to go on.
I hate my saddle, So have ordered a sofa like 140g jobbie.

8.5kg!
sadface
Fixed off road is one of those things that I have absolutely no intention of trying! I get pedal strike bad enough when i'm able to attempt to prevent it!
Leith Hill SS is a walk in the park though ;)
In fact, here's my Haro Mary SS laying against Leith Tower!
