  • I'm tempted to buy one of those discounted classics to put in the loft in case mine ever breaks.

Awesome find - just bought two! One for office (replacing dreadful delonghi) and one for my mum. Nice work.

  • i appreciate that there's going to be a learning curve, but how hard is it to pull a half-decent shot from a classic when you first start using one? does it take a lot of time to create half decent results?

  • ^ depends on grinder, beans etc not just machine.

  • ^^

If you have a decent grinder, doesn't take long. If you don't it's a crapshoot and you'll randomly get one and wonder why you can't repeat it.

cool. well i always buy monmouth / nude / red brick beans so should be sorted in that respect.

but my grinder doesn't have any fineness 'settings' as such, you just alter how coarse the grind is by how long you press the grind button...! i guess it would be worth getting one with proper settings on it so i can get an espresso grind out of it?

  • ^ yup, Porlex Mini if you're only pulling a few shots a day / week.

decent tamper too, bin the plastic one. 58mm I think, but don't take that as gospel.

thanks dude. i was just looking at the automatic ones, like a krups expert or delonghi DG79. does it have a way of measuring how fine the grind is though? as i thought that was the main point of getting a higher quality grinder...?

so many questions! bit of a minefield this coffee business. but all good.

  • Entry level grinders are mixed coarseness mud n dust fests, a decent auto will cost as much if not more than the classic. Get the porlex mini then spend balance on bike bits instead...

  • ^these automatic ones are about the same as the porlex... will do a bit o' research

  • Where are you based? I've a Krupps Expert I am using as a dust catcher. You can borrow for nowt if nearby (Manchester), then return it when you get the hand grinder.

I was in your shoes a couple years back... buy cheap, buy twice.

  • I've got this Gaggia grinder, you rotate the hopper to adjust the fineness of the grind.

Monmouth espresso beans when new are a "4", going down to "2" when they get older.

  • At that new place in Kentish Town West they serve Square Mile flat white in small glasses. It feels and tastes wrong. What would be an argument for them to get medium sized cups?

Fields beneath? The coffee is good - but the atmosphere/banter/vibe is pants

  • 1.5 kg of coffee from union roasters due to arrive tomorrow

should last me a while in addition to the hasbean weekly supply

  • Is any one on here selling or thinking about selling their Porlex?

  • I'm keeping mine as a travel solution...

  • Damn... Gaggia Classic now bought for sis and brother-in-law.

    Cheers for the heads up!

  • time to upgrade silvia

should i go for the auber PID kit with steam control and pre infusion?

I wouldn't buy one second-hand to be honest. Totally worth the 30 quid new.

  • There's more to it than that. Consistent and correct pressure. Consistent and correct temperature during the brew.

The Classic is great for the money.

    Cheers guys. Classic ordered :)
