Best OTP CX Wheels (for me)?

Posted on
  • Looking for some new CX wheels. Not the best view of what's available out there though.

    Black.
    £300 tops.
    Pref. no fancy lacing pattern.

    Pls help.

  • I have ridden Mavic Aksium Race and now Campagnolo Khamsin. Both are very cheap and last well. The Khamsins are easier to clean.

  • For that £ you'd get a better set of handbuilts surely?

  • Hope Hoops with TN719's are around that money, when I looked at it you'd struggle to build them for what you can buy them for complete.

  • I have bought Khamsin for 110 gbps (140 gbp for the cx-version). You will not get anything handbuilt in that range..

  • I used a set of Khamsins for a CX race once, they went in the bin afterwards, totally destroyed. Had a lot of road miles on them beforehand though.

Go to Harry Rowland or Wheelsmith and see what they will build you, be stronger and easier to repair

  • If your getting wheels built for CX go for tubs no question about it!

  • Thanks guys. Anyone got experience with Fulcrum 7 CX:s?

It's not for a particularly fancy bike which is why i'm going for complete wheels, otherwise i'd probably build my own. No plans for racing them either, but occasional muddy rides on weekends etc.

  • Fulcrum 7 CX = Khamsin CX, same factory at least.

  • See if you can get some Planet X pro carbon 50s second hand.

  • What about those new farsports wide 50mm tubs?

Just get some Askiums or RS10s then. Any otp wheelset will do unless you weigh 30 tonnes and are utterly hamfisted when it comes to bike handling.

Spend the £200 change on something worthwhile.

If you really want to spend the £300 strada do a velocity a23 build for just shy of your budget.

  • Are these race wheels or for general use? If it's for race use I'd advocate tubs

  • The op said no plans for racing, just occasional muddy rides.

  • Agree with the A23. That wider (but still fairly light) rim makes better use of teh wider tyre you will be using.

  • The op said no plans for racing, just occasional muddy rides.

in that case just get some khamsins

  • Velocity a23 (or similar f.e H+Son tb14/ archetype) to Shimano 105 - 32h or 36h
