• hey guys,

A call has gone out on the London Hack Space mailing list about Nesta's 'Hands off my Bike!' competition:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!starred/london-hack-space/U0sJp7L4e3E
Looks like a great competition, with the potential to help launch (or 'kick-start'!) another Cycle Hoop, :-)

• Sounds good. Any ideas?

• Ride fixed gear brakeless and foil the scum!

• setting your bike in a block of concrete should win

• "The winning innovation will be the one that during the live testing results in the longest time to steal the bike with a minimum threshold of 5 minutes."

That does seem to favor the block of concrete approach, there must be more to it than that ...?

• I'm telling you, I've thought this through!

• Do it!
Or just put a HUGE gear on it and watch time try and accelerate.

The Challenge Team

• will be updating the #BicycleMovementAlert entry soon..

• 50k prize. Goddam. If only I had ideas and a way of building stuff.

• Velociraptors with lasers and a tshirt with security on the back.

• Does the thief have to ride off or just unlock it?
I think a lockable BB/crankset would be useful to stop them riding off.

• the competition aim is making it harder to steal bicycles - but i guess that would include parts of bicycles as well!

• @I-Ripper - that's actually a really good idea - is there some ingenious way of preventing the chain from turning which is really hard to break?!

• {a tired head starts to over-think}
Zzzz

• just seen that the winner has been announced,

The winner of the Hands Off My Bike Challenge Prize is BiKLOX.

I-Ripper had already called the winning idea!!

this gives me faith that the youth can solve all of the planet's problems, restful sleep awaits, :-)

• How is that winning one any different to sticking a kryptonite mini around the seat tube and rear rim? It looks considerably more faff, and if anything even less secure.

• I quite like the G-lock thing. If you can use it one-handed that's progress. D-locks require you to use the hand with the key in – risking scratching the bike and just a bit awkward.

I must be missing something with the winner though. That's just not a good idea. It's already easy to 'immobilise' a bike (mini d through either wheel or disc lock through the chainset) but it's not going to stop the theft of the type of (light) bikes people use in the uk. The added cable lock... we all know cable locks aren't enough.
