Decent budget waterproofs

Posted on
  • Hi guys, I'm looking for some cheap waterproofs, specifically trousers, although I might consider a full set if they are cheap and worthwhile.

Basically, I need something to bike to work in, I only commute about 3 miles and the weather hasn't been too bad lately so something lightweight will suffice, just need protection from showers and all the shit that the road sprays up my back.

Anyone got any suggestions, or even places to start looking? Price really is the key factor, everything I've seen in online bike shops is £30+, I bike to work to save money, I can't justify £30 on some plastic trousers I'll wear for an hour a day.

Thanks for the help in advance guys!

  • army and navy stores usually do some cheap stuff
not definate but they usually do

  • i got some cheap ones from soccer sports for about 6 quid, they piss in at the seams tho so unless you have guards buy a decent pair as theyll last years

  • I have been thinking about this too.

    1. you get what you pay for. £7.50 waterproofs = bad fit, will fill with sweat and be vile and stenched within days. would not bang.

    2. HTFU and go in your shorts legs are waterproof by nature and dry very quickly.

    3. £30 odd well spent.

Thanks didnt think of this one, is there much point in getting any specifically built for cycling? they seem like there would be a few decent modifications that make it worth getting cycling ones, ie slimmer lower leg, reflective strips, higher back

thanks, yeah id rather spend a bit more on some and get some that arent just trousers made out of PVC or something shite haha. I'm not adverse to spending £30+ on a pair if thats the best option and they will last me, just wanted to check if there's any anyone's seen online or something for a bit cheaper or whatever.

hmmm shorts is actually an option, especially seeing as it hasnt really been that cold recently, apart from the odd day or two. only thing is, they wont protect me from the spray up the back, but I guess the best solution for that is a mudguard really!

    Cheers guys!

  • i just got raceblades, they work

  • Sports Direct sell Muddy Fox gear thats generally heavily discounted. I picked up a pair of waterpoof trousers with decent sealed zips and velcro adjustment on the ankles/calves for £19 when they should have been £50. Selection available can bea bit random but it's worth a look.

  • revolution are pretty reliable, could be a good investment if you can push the budget to £35.

are those muddy fox trousers any good, are they fully waterproof, and are they long in the leg, so they don't ride up when you sit down?

  • Mudguards + shorts = more sense that waterproof pants.

  • Shorts all year round, if you get cold pedal faster.

  • Shorts all year round, if your knees fall apart, blame me.

    Fixed that for you.

Seriously guys, y'all need to be taking care of your knees during the winter.

I have some half decent waterproof trews from an army surplus store, cost me about £20. I think they are some kinda GoreTex type material.

They ain't very long and the fit at the bottom is shit so I roll them up a bit.

On top I use a £5 Decathlon bin bag. Yeah it gets sweaty but I've washed it every time I've worn it and it's still waterproof.

  • ^ Ah no you are right. Riding fixed is bad enough for the knees as it is.

I got to get myself some leggings to protect the ol knees.

  • Cheap Regatta overtrousers from Go Outdoors / Cotswold et al. Get change from a tenner and they do the job pretty well

  • If I were the OP I'd head for the sailing aisle in Decathlon*. Sailors know about waterproofs, I picked up my kid a great coat for peanuts there.

*used to seem cheap, either it's got pricier or I've got cheaper. Or a bit of both.

  • ^^I've got some Regatta ones too from the army surplus store about 15 years ago. They were less than a tenner. Still going strong, breathable enough to cope with a short hop at a relaxed pace (should be going more slowly in the rain anyway).

The best feature is the pocket holes - no pockets, but a slit so that you can easily reach into your trouser pockets. Doesn't compromise waterproofness. They have a pop-stud to slightly the gather each ankle, but I don't bother with that and just use elasticated trouser clips/bands anyway.

The muddy fox ones looked ok, but i opted for the karrimor waterproof only a couple of quid more and they just seemed better made, anyway I got the x-large for leg length and they work a treat so far, only down side no pockets
