Descending Crouch Hill at a nice pace, Transit ahead of me is turning right, filter down his left-hand side, Corsa appears from nowhere, carries on appearing from nowhere, my first reaction is "wow, that hurt a lot less than I expected", second reaction "oh shit, I'm actually still going and heading straight for the kerb". Was completely calm in talking to the driver, but I'm now shaking at my desk, drinking sugary tea and trying to tell myself that it really wasn't my fault but I should probably be more careful when filtering.

Quoted from my facebook status last friday
im cycling behind a van, van for no apparent reason makes an abrupt stop (clear road in front, no traffic etc). managed to skid myself sideways and hit the back of the van side on, immediately i signalled to the driver to pull over but he just drove off, after he drove off i realised he had stopped to speak to (i assume) a friend of his walking

A not dissimilar thing happened to me on the descent from Christmas Common towards Watlington, when a big white van stopped with no signals or obvious reason on an empty stretch of the road. It turned out he had stopped to put out a sign saying "CAUTION: CYCLISTS IN ROAD" for a charity ride that was coming through later that day.

had an o shit moment on sunday morning, went into the back of a mondeo in camden. lights were going to amber, and a mini behind me suddenly went to overtake me in my lane. i looked back over my shoulder for a split second, looked in front of me and the mondeo had stopped because of a car in front of him. i couldn't swere round as the mini had boxed me in, so i locked both wheels in the quarter second and got my gloved knuckles into position, then pounded into his boot at about 10mph. everything was ok but shook me up royally, massive adrenaline rush 3 mins later and i got lost on camden road even though i'm there all the time! any faster and it would have been serious. scary stuff.

Fuck me that would have been scary - that piece of road is a 35mph descent, quite bumpy with some surprisingly blind corners.
A mate of mine got caught out on the other descent into Watlington with a similar unforseen stopping car on a good road - he went off into the hedge.

Couldn't you tell how soon you'd need to stop as soon as the lights changed?
Or, y'know, ride a safe distance away.

It was a bit scary but then I'm not a demon descender and was certainly not going at 35 at that point. Still had to put (a) my brakes and (b) the grippiness on my completely slick tyres to the test to scrub off enough speed to get round the van. It wasn't until another rider had come past that I learnt about the "CAUTION" sign.

Oh shit its flooded...
Riding to work last night, the calm route through the park, get to path that goes inbetween the fishing are and the river, 2 big puddles between them few inches deep, take my feet out the pedals and ride through like a big kid.
Riding back home the same night, properly flooded this time, up to my bottom bracket, about 30ft long, still ride through for the fun of it, legs got soaked of course.
Then riding to work last night on the road to avoid the puddle, then come across another one! deep enough to cover a landrovers wheels, fuck that, turn around and take a detour.
Decide to ride back through the park after work again to see what its like, flooded way worse, almost covering the hight of a bin, Oh shit... detour again.

I learnt why we wait at zebras until the people are all the way across today ... I'm riding about a meter from the curb as a I approach, I slow to let a kid cross and aim to pass behind her while she's still crossing. Bad earthloop. A motorbike comes from behind me and zips through without stopping, causing the kid to leap back into my path. I didn't hit her, but it was quite close.

no that is why motor vehicle shd wait, if they did the kid would not have back up and you would have been on your way

It was so windy yesterday! Nearly filled my pants as I bombed it down the hill and on to the flat across Bournemouth sea front. I felt like a big gust could take my wheels from under me at 30ish mph. (note to self, don't ride along the road by the sea front when it's windy)
Oh shit moment today was going wound this weird roundabout ish thing on the bottom of the Avenue in southampton, I was sat nicely towards the middle of the outside lane, nice and visible. Everyone else saw me except a taxi flying towards the roundabout, I'm not sure if he didn't see me or was just going to fast and not able to stop. He start flying straight out as I was in front of him, I managed to swerve into the inside lane and then back into outside lane to avoid being t-boned, he was braking but even so it was far too close. I don't actually know how I wasn't hit, it was so close. Taxi driver sheepishly drove along side me in the other lane as I made my way to the bus lane, I made it clear he was a dick head but given the bollocking he was receiving from his passengers I think he had realised he nearly fucked up.
