  • NOt much is planned at the moment, as that day i came and met you, some pleb knocked my S3 out of my hand and it has smashed, shelling out £200 on a new screen sucks!

    I cant make my mind up whether i want a aero lever or just a bmx lever....

    I have built her fully now, will post a pic!

    Can anyone recomend some decent pedals that will take the chunky straps?

  • I'm stuck with the same decision about the lever.

    I just bought the cheapest BMX levers on eBay to see if I like a BMX lever
    If I don't like em, well then I wasted 8 pound

  • Hi All,

    Apologies with the lack of updates, but due too some utter muppet knocking my galaxy S3 out of my hand the other day, bike parts are having to wait!

    I have built the bike fully now, so it works, just wanting to get my hands on a front wheel, and some dual pivot brakes that fit.

    The frame is drilled for old style brakes only, and no new ones i have tried will fit it, anyone got any ideas for some dual pivot brakes that might fit it?

    Also ordered some TT bars, and am contemplating in making it a fixed with the TT bars for longer rides!

    Will post some pictures over the weekend!

  • Is it the brake drop or the nut-fitting that's the problem?

  • These brakes are dual-pivot with nut fitting and a drop that should be long enough. I put them on a Peugeot I used to have.

    As they were only £30 when I bought them, I suspect the seller made a mistake when listing them!

  • ^ Ribble and Spa Cycles both sell 'em for £30 a pair.

  • They only have the allen key fitting version though - don't buy them without checking that you're getting the right ones first, I've made that mistake.

    As far as I can remember, it's only Performance Cycles that still do the nutted versions

  • Actually you're right, the Spa versions are nut fitting as well, but Ribble's definitely aren't.

    stupid question but do they brake well? The old Weinnman ones i have are such a pain!

  • Judging by the last photo you posted, a chain and a chainring.

    I found the R539s pretty good yeah, though I thought the Weinmann side-pulls were decent brakes as well, they're just a pain to set up.

  • Haha, i have the bike running fully at the moment, i just want to find some better brakes...

    Might just take them to my LBS to set the weinmann brakes up better.
    Its not that i dislike them, they just dont stop me well enough!

    Ill pop a picture up when i get a chance, im just busy at the moment.

  • What size wheels do you have on this frame mate? I have a Peugeot, Carbolite 103, have put some 700s on it and the long drop brakes I have on it don't quite reach the wheel rim!! That's already at about 73mm. I haven't seen any calipers around that reach longer than that

  • errrrrrm i think they are 700's will have a proper look tomorrow.

    Anyone got any suggestions on how to get better clearance, keep pedal hopping and its getting dangerous now!

    It's odd that you need "the shortest cranks ever made, ever" - after all, you've only dropped from the original 630mm rims to 622mm (700C). So your bike is just 4mm closer to the floor than the original design.

    You can get (junior) cranks down in the 150mm range but unless your current cranks are super-long, it sounds more like your cornering technique on fixed as much as anything. Personally, I love canting the bike right over in corners and keeping my body slightly more upright, but I've had to do the opposite when riding fixed and keep the bike more upright to maintain pedal clearance but lean my bodyweight across instead.

    Instead of shorter cranks (or even as well as) you could try running with wide slicks, like lots of people are doing. That would jack your ride height up by double what you lost in the change of wheel. Good rolling resistance on the wider tyres and a softer ride. Can look a bit strange on old racers though.

  • How long are the current cranks, centre to centre? They do look a bit close to the ground in that picture.
