  • Hi all,

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a touring bike, or just the frame, with the following spec:

    • steel
    • size 54 cm (roughly 21.5")
    • clearances for 32mm tyres
    • 700c
    • mudguard eyelets
    • rack eyelets
    • preferably cantilever braze-ons

paint condition / colour unimportant, but no dents / dings please.
Let's see what you've got, you never know.

    Thanks in advance

should fit your bill perfectly I think

  • thanks peter, I'm after something a bit more 80's than that, but otherwise perfect!
    Anyone else??

  • Have you checked whether Vaidas at Honor Oak Park still has that Dawes Galaxy? I think he was asking only £180 or so for it, and it looked pretty much ready to roll.

  • Ooh, that sounds good. Cheers

  • still looking...

  • Went to look at these yesterday, he's got what your after and then some.....

  • Been trying to get hold of Jim by PM all week, got a reply on day one, saying he'd get back to me, but nothing since.. I guess my messages are getting lost in the most ridiculous forum inbox ever.

Do you have a contact number for him you could PM me?

  • Gaz, pm'd no. he's expecting your call.... you really gotta go and have a look, well worth the trip and he's close to the train station if stuck

  • Thanks for that Jay, much appreciated!

  • Still lookin'...

Think I'm more interested in a whole bike at the moment, running out of time to start a new project.

  • Maybe, what size is it?
    does it have rack mounts?

  • It's a 21inch/54cm c-t frame. I've had a rack on it in the past, but one which has the single-bolt upper fitting, which attaches to the brake-bridge bolt hole. There are one set of threaded holes on the dropouts, so I had the rack and the mudguard stays bolted to the same hole. I still have the rack so that'll be included, but the Brookes and Carradice were recent presents, so they wont be. Alternatives can be supplied if needed.

  • Cheers vf, not what I'm after really though.
If anyone has the right size Dawes Galaxy, Raleigh Royal, Claude Butler Dalesman, Surly Crosscheck, or similar, then please please pm me. Running out of time to get something now!

  • Gaz,
I have a 1993/94 Dawes Galaxy 21" bought new from St John Cycles. The frame says Super Galaxy, grey but it was set up with Galaxy specs. It is in very good nick - some scratches etc as you would expect but I have looked after it.

Do you want photos? One draw back is I live in Norfolk.

  • Hi Baggins,
Sorry, just seen this - bought a Galaxy off the 'bay a couple of weeks ago. Yet to pick it up, but I think I'm now officially out of the market for a touring bike!

    Thanks for posting though.

  • BUMP!

So I bought a Dawes Galaxy which despite being pretty much perfect for the job, is also just a tad on the small side...

Which means I'm potentially in the market for something else.
Frame only preferably, as I'm on more of a budget these days, and with a 54cm / 21.5" ctc seat tube.

Still with rack mounts front and rear, canti brakes (will also consider disk brakes), and double bottle cage mounts.

Let's see what you've got... ebay hasn't been very helpful recently in this quest.

  • Is this too old? The size is definitely right.

  • Yeah sorry, too old... 80's / 90's / 00's ideally.
Needs it to be 700c and have English threads, as I'll be transferring most of the kit from the Galaxy over to it.

    Thanks though Vince...

  • Sorry, no again: not even slightly a tourer, and not 54cm!
To make things easier, here's a check list. If it doesn't tick all these boxes, then it isn't what I'm looking for:

    1. 54cm seat tube, ctc
    2. less than 56cm top tube ctc
    3. mudguard eyes front and rear
    4. braze ons for front (low rider) and rear pannier racks.
    5. steel
    6. for 700c wheels
    7. canti / v / disk brakes (ie not calliper)
    8. two pairs of bottle cage mounts.
    9. good threads / no structural damage (ie usable)
    10. clearances for 32mm tyres and mudguards

This will be a dedicated long-distance tourer, so all of the above are essentials... I can't use an audax or cyclocross or rando frame, etc. for what I have in mind. Think Long Haul Trucker / Galaxy / Royal / xo-1 / etc: proper purpose-designed tourers.
