mtb 9 speed and road 10

  • So I'm putting gears back onto one of my bikes, its running a Shimano lx 9 speed shifter and because of the small cassette I want a short cage rear mech, will a Shimano 105 10 speed work? Either 5600 or 5700?

Got the 5600 on my gt so would probably put that onto this bike and the new 5700 onto my gt with 5600 shifters.

Will that work? I've read something about Shimano 10 speed mtb and road parts not working together?

  • First problem: Yes, should work fine.
Second problem. Yes, should work fine.

The issue arises with some of the most modern 10 speed MTB stuff using a new cable pull ratio they call Dyna-sis

  • Sweet cheers mate, so I wouldn't be able to upgrade to a 10 speed shifter and keep that Mech?

  • I think, as long as the shifter matches the cassette, 9 and 10 speed Shimano mechs are generally interchangeable
