1) this is the US where trial lawyers outnumber sensible folks 17-to-1
2) (positive point) RAAM run a pretty tight ship, with few fatalities over the years but as more participants either a) endanger themselves or b) act in such a manner as to making the continued existence of the event less likely, RAAM organisers have had to make more rules, penalties and general structure. I saw a few really scary videos of what riders and crew had done at the UK RAAM crew briefing in 2011- either through fatigue or sheer idiocy- I do a have a little sympathy.
