In many ways, it's a massive success story. When you have found all the gains there are in the things you have under control, the next step is to find a way to control everything and anything else, in the case of Lance era pro cycling, all that was left was doping. To mastermind and control this was the final piece in the jigsaw of success.
Taking morality and legality away for a moment, this is the ultimate attention to marginal gains, how else would it have been possible for him to 'win' 7 tours?
