If you took that attitude all racing is pointless. I mean, it is, but people enjoy racing. People enjoy being fastest at something or setting constraints to ride within - like people choosing to tour on singlespeed/fixed/penny. I personally would prefer to tour around the world but there's a win to be had and a record to be set so it will attract someone.
