4 man team would be doable and almost enjoyable.. Solo and two man would be horrendous.

too rich for me. would be real keen on this but more in the subsistence, do it yourself kind of way rather than support vehicle etc etc.
looks like a great endurance ride tho

Like Petervary in the RAAM, it's possible but not sure what's the rule is in the RACE.

thanks for the link. impressive ride there!

wow the raam director's statement makes him look a total douche. aas an event organiser i get why he'd say something to that affect but wow. why so very harsh?
-
• #11
Simply because he didn't have any support thus can't qualify for the RAAM despite doing it.

They have a point though. If you're not entered into a race you can't be riding it. Marko Baloh spent 3-4 years raising money to race it and ended up in hospital with a clot in his lungs and hat to pull out before it killed him. Anyone can ride across America.

http://worldcycleracing.com/racing round the world is pointless in my opinion. why race it when its best enjoyed at a slower pace? i couldnt think of anything worse than waking up thinking, i'd like to stay in this village/town/city or whatever but have to do another 200miles tomorrow to move onto the next place etc etc.

If you took that attitude all racing is pointless. I mean, it is, but people enjoy racing. People enjoy being fastest at something or setting constraints to ride within - like people choosing to tour on singlespeed/fixed/penny. I personally would prefer to tour around the world but there's a win to be had and a record to be set so it will attract someone.

That looks good.
A closer alternative is the Race Around Ireland. I was crew for a solo entrant for the race in 2010 and 2011.
Completing the RAI also counts as a RAAM qualifying ride (valid for two years) if that's anyone's goal.

Go for it hippy!

Hippy has already qualified for RAAM with his 400+ miles in the National 24hr this year.
Having the thousands of pounds required to enter with a crew is another matter altogether.
Closer to home with no qualification or support crew required:

1) this is the US where trial lawyers outnumber sensible folks 17-to-1
2) (positive point) RAAM run a pretty tight ship, with few fatalities over the years but as more participants either a) endanger themselves or b) act in such a manner as to making the continued existence of the event less likely, RAAM organisers have had to make more rules, penalties and general structure. I saw a few really scary videos of what riders and crew had done at the UK RAAM crew briefing in 2011- either through fatigue or sheer idiocy- I do a have a little sympathy.

.I find this statement offensive and unnecessarily provocative.

Hmmm that was intended as overstatement for the sake of humour, you would agree that they are a fraction more litigious there??
-

At a very wild guess, Clive resents the entirely reasonable implication that there is a dichotomy between lawyers and sensible 'folk'.

Not relevant to RACE specifically, but is to endurance riding; an interview with the late Jure Robic.

It is fascinating and well worth reading the whole thing. Such a shame he died the way he did.

Jure is something else.
It's also worth reading Hell on Two Wheels by Amy Snyder, fascinating insight into the RAAM.
