• Yeah except for the taper when the crank goes onto, didn't think you were supposed to do that.

  • chainring bolts!

  • On a brand new Crank set? It was the problem on my old crank set

  • There are many things to check here by the sound of it. Let us know what you have done so far.

  • I've check the seat post clamp which is nice and tight, headset is all ok, BB was tight when I installed it a little while ago, Crank is on tight but my mate has my torque wrench so might not be 35nm?

When I installed the pedals I didn't re-grease them as they had plenty of grease on from when I fitted them, would it be worth removing them again to give them a clean and re grease?

  • Always worth a re grease if you are having creaking problems. I'd also check the cog / chain are in decent condition.

  • Cog is in good condition, chain could be debatable. Will check tomorrow, thanks.

  • Right, I've taking everything apart and cleaned/re-greased then double checked everything is tight. I've given the frame a good looking over and there is no cracks or signs of cracks/fractures in the paint.

The click only happens when I go to pull away quickly putting a lot of pressure through the frame and when I skid stop, could it just be the frame creaking a bit? I can't seem to find anything and nothing is loose so I'd say it's harmless, that said it is really annoying. the bike is so smooth and fast so this noise really bugs me especially as it isn't all the time.

  • ^ could it be something else? My keys sometimes click in my pockey when I'm out the saddle, the sound comes from the BB area.

  • I doubt it, I rode it around today and it still did it then jumped on my beater bike and that was silent. I'll get over it haha

  • aaarrrghhhh.
so i was having a clicking noise when putting force through the cranks, usually at the end of the pedal stroke. tightened the fuck out of the bottom bracket shell, cranks bolts and pedals. shimano anti-seize'd all. also wet lubed the chain. clicking still there (seems better) and now i have a squeeling too.
could the squealing be too little lube? any ideas on the clicking (will try re-align rear wheel tonight)?

Clean the BB shell and the Seat tube, I had a similar problem on an older bike and this sorted it.

  • Sorted the squeaking.
Cheers, will try cleaning the BB shell when I'm feeling strong.

  • i noticed a slight creaking and clicking on my Dolan when riding slowly, just realised it was my saddle! seems to have a little wiggle room where the rails are attached

    worth keeping in mind

I'm putting this down to the noise on my bike, it's the only thing I can think of.

  • Try just move the saddle side to side with your hands, hard as you can, i did it and heard a similar sound, also dose it more with different trousers, non stretchy ones...

  • Having a similar problem here so going to disassemble and regrease the lot. Will report back with the results!

  • Please could someone help me diagnose the clicks (maybe they're ticks?) that I'm getting. I have tried a lot and it is driving me nuts. I ride a seven speed freewheel road bike with no front mech.

There is a clicking sound each time the drive side crank arm and the non-drive side crank arm are at 1 o' clock and 11 o' clock respectively and when I'm pedalling with force (and standing up). It doesn't happen when I'm pedalling sitting down and it also doesn't always happen when I'm standing up. It happens on every gear.

Having read a lot, things I've tried:

    • changed pedals, crankset and disassembled, regreased and reassembled.
    • tightened handlebar and stem parts since it may explain why it only happens when standing up.

I also noticed that when it didn't happen, it was necessary (but not sufficient) to let the bike freewheel before it would starting clicking again (and vice versa). Therefore I tried replacing the rear wheel and freewheel but the problem still persisted.

I am now suspecting the BB although this would seem unlikely since I've only had it for a few months.

Any suggestions would be extremely welcomed! Thanks in advance.

  • Could be the bottom bracket, if its a cartridge type then it may just have come a bit loose rather than be worn, although i got through a cheap bb in less than 2 months. Try tightening it, failing that make sure the taper on your bb is compatible with your cranks and check your chainring bolts.

  • Ensure your rear skewer is clamped up fully tight.

  • your disc rotor is tapping on the caliper ?

  • There is a clicking sound each time the drive side crank arm and the non-drive side crank arm are at 1 o' clock and 11 o' clock respectively

    Huh?

either your cranks are on completely wrong, or you are getting the click twice in one pedal revolution.
If the latter it does sound like the bb is not completely tight in the frame, and given what you have changed so far that would be my best guess. Alternatively try riding along and just rolling the bike slightly from side to side by using the bars (i.e. not leaning, but steering) does the click happen then too?

  • does anyone else hear the 'click', or only you..?

  • the latter!
the bb was the first thing i suspected and i tightened it as tight as i could when i put it back on. i'll check the skewer.
    thanks for all the replies

  • adroit, so I tried rolling on it with only one foot on the pedals and turning the handle bars a lot and it does indeed click. does this narrow it down in any way?
