  • Well you don't what an oil based lubricant on a oil based cable outer. Hence using tallow.

Also pipe stud finder things help discover junction boxes.

  • And I suppose it would bring the added benefit of making my entire flat smell like a kebab shop.

Junction boxes- they generally have a socket or lamp coming out of them, so fairly easy to spot.

I suspect that a stud finder would have a hard time discerning what is junction box/conduit, from what is reinforcing rod, given that it's reinforced concrete.

  • Look at screwfix/toolstation for the thing to pull the cable through and the cable lubricant.

The stud finder should give a stronger signal from something thats surface mounted than set deep and also should give you an idea of width of what you are sensing.

  • Therefore, it would give a strong signal when it encounters a surface mounted junction box with, for example, a switch or lamp coming out of it, but given that the conduit is run in between reinforcing steel work I suspect it would be of limited utility for detecting that.

Anyway, I can work out approximately where the conduit is, and to be honest it's not that important as long as I know where either end are.

  • I'll get right onto rubbing the three core and earth down with some bacon.

  • Tallow is rendered so doesn't smell.

Also wasting bacon is a fucking sin. Use facon.

  • Have you tested it with your tongue?

  • Midweek= work I am paid to do.

  • You mean you don't do DIY payments?

  • Worked out a way to use my router- I got it second hand and the base is warped:

  • Enjoying myself today doing little fiddly bits.

    Hmm, bit ugly.

That looks a bit better (in my view).

  • I'd like a biscuit jointer as it happens. And a straight router. And a table saw. And a router table.

  • Shame you're in smelly old london as i've got that kit in the garage, ho hum..

  • Bit far to pop over and borrow something it is true.

Let me know if you fancy making some space in the garage and I'll pop over!

Has anyone used one of these?

  • Mine's a trend pro, but that looks good enough. Thing is, you end up bolting on extension supports and guides to accommodate the inevitably larger workpieces.
Trend also do a pretty decent biscuiting kit and biscuits.
Best kit is the worktop template set, yields beautifully tight mitres and returns.

  • Just bought the Rutlands one, fingers crossed that I'll be able to true up the router so it presents square on in the table.

  • De walts are fully serviceable, have you looked at spares for a refurb?

you'll want to use it free at somepoint

..and some good tips here > http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/

  • I got a refurb quote- more than they go for complete on eBay. Mine is the 615 1/4". The whole foot assembly is warped, and would need binning I suspect.

  • Hmm, base not so cheap

  • Try sourcing a new foot and other spares under the Perles brand.
Their routers were identical to the small Dewalt ones in every way except colour (they made them for Dewalt or something) but were less than half the price new.
Not sold in this country any more, but they occasionally come up on eBay.

  • @ Dammit

If you've not done so, I would recommend adding additional support to the shower tray around the centre. I've replaced a couple that have broken due to inadequate support.

  • It's a Bette shower tray- 5mm steel which I mounted on a wooden frame.

  • That shouldn't break. The ones I replaced were resin units. Both cracked around the drain hole.
If there's any flex in it you may still want to add a bit extra support. All I did was squirt some filler foam on the floor, slap some offcuts of timber in it and then fill the gap between the timber and tray with more foam. Took around 5 minutes.
If you don't already own a filler foam gun, buy one now. You'll thank me after!

  • Anyone got a drill press/pillar drill?

I need to very precise holes drilling to mount my router to the router table plate.
