Following the awful death of a 5 year old boy on St George’s Rd recently, a number of groups have started a campaign to try to get TfL to address the appalling roads which they control in and around the Elephant & Castle. We've produced a document which I can PM as requested which outlines just how dangerous these roads are for cyclists and pedestrians in particular and proposes a number of measures to make them safer in the short-term. This document will be sent to Isabel Dedring at TfL once we have increased the number of local organisations supporting it.

In addition there is an online petition: http://tiny.cc/rh2tmw**

We are planning a day of action on** Friday 16th November in the Elephant & Castle** area when we will try to get as many petition signatures as possible.

We are hoping that this will indicate to TfL just how strong the feelings are about these roads. If you could support this, spread the word, sign it, tweet it etc. that would be great.

    Thank you!

  • done signed, keep it up, used to live on oswin st

Signed it, tweeted it, Facebooked it. If all the forumungers here did the same this petition would be huge in no time at all! The story of the 5 year old boy run down in front of his family on the pedestrian crossing in E&C couldn't fail to move anyone and demonstrate the need for change there.

Let me know what I can do to help on the 16th - happy to run a blog post on that day and also come down after work to help collect signatures if it's of use?

  • Yes please! Thanks Mark. I'll drop you an email...

  • I'm doing some research on road safety and came across this:

Some sobering and surprising facts and figures on cycling deaths in this country.

It's odd they use the term 'accidents' though: http://twowheelsandbeyond.blogspot.co.uk/p/cycling-accidents-facts-and-figures.html

  • One problem with this 'road safety' reporting and the whole concept of road safety is because it is generally victim focussed the outcomes are always questions like:

What can we do to prevent cyclists being injured or killed?
    rather than
What can we do to stop drivers killing people?

The more we focus on the drivers rather than the cyclists we'll stop talking about helmets and RLJing but on slowing drivers speed, punishing them more harshly for causing danger etc.

^this is touching on road danger reduction which has it's own thread.

  • If London Cycling Campaign members want to make electronic votes in the LCC board election and they haven't received an email from LCC about this, they must email membership@lcc.org.uk by the end of Thurs 8th Nov. That will ensure that you are registered for electronic voting with the correct email address.

Members still have until midnight next Monday 12th November to actually vote.
Details on how to vote are here. http://www.lfgss.com/post3202602-576.html

The Annual General Meeting will be on Wednesday 14th at London Southbank University, Keyworth St, SE1 6NG registration 5.30, meeting 6pm Let us know if you are coming.

Yes we have seen it and had messages from British Cycling and CTC. Sustrans have also noticed.

Rural roads are already much more hazardous, per mile cycled, than urban streets, some people say 10 times more hazardous. On the other hand 70% of lorries break the speed limit on these roads so why not change the law to make them more law abiding?

  • Why not change the law to allow cyclists to jump red lights? (etc)

  • I like that their reasoning is that 70% break the law, so its gives an unfair advantage to those that don't. Start catching the ones that do then!

The way DfT describe it :
DfT statistics on monitored free-flow roads estimate that around 70% of HGVs currently travel over 40 mph and it is argued that these HGVs have an unfair competitive advantage over those who stick to the speed limit.
I'm sure cycle couriers could develop a parallel argument.

  • Spotted A.
Why is is that every hammond is a LIAR and a fantasist?saw some.quotes.of.his.today whilst covering the whole wiggo thing, liar!.

  • It has been a while since we complained about the fact you are not allowed to cycle on More London, so I have written to the directors and arranged an on-site meeting to see if we can come up with a solution, albeit a comprimise. Seems nuts that people wishing to access City Hall even have to dismount.

Does anyone on here work or visit the ML area a lot and would like to come along on 19th Nov at 5pm?

  • Please keep us all posted on Nov 16 plans

  • Day of Action for Safer Roads at the Elephant & Castle on Friday 16th November (starts at 8am), ending with a vigil organised by RoadPeace for those killed on London's roads. The vigil will begin at 5pm.

The day will be based in the space outside the London College of Communication.

Any support gaining paper signatures during the day would be very welcome.

    Online petition is:
    http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/safer-roads-at-the-elephant-castle/signatures.html

If you can encourage more cyclists to come along to support it we would be very grateful.

    Thanks

    Alex

  • This is crazy. Definitely start catching the offenders don't change their speed to justify speeding. Hell HGV's are merely cyclist killers. Ahhh well maybe need to jump more red lights rather than stand around for a HGV driver who wants to achieve the new speed limit.

I wonder what they're excuse will be when 70% start breaking that speed limit again. Will they just increase the speed again.

  • Another great meeting of the London Cycling Campaign last night. Lots of questions about campaigning on road junctions, lorries and the 2014 local elections. The meeting voted to put our support behind this:

We also had elections for the new members of the LCC board of trustees. The five winners are:
    Rachel Aldred
    Suzanne Fogg
    David Love
    Melanie Grech
    Claire Wren

Three of the winners had been co-opted members of the board. They had been brought in last year to provide special skills and increase diversity. Now we have a 50-50 gender balance. Forum favourite Oliver Schick just missed out, coming 6th out of 18 candidates. Hopefully he will continue to take and active part in steering LCC policy.

  • ^ brilliant.

  • Anyone know who is best to lobby at the Royal Parks regarding cycling facilities, the Winter Wonderland is about to open on a pretty useful bit of cycle lane.
