  • I was almost hit by a taxi this morning at old street round about, i came to a stop at the light behind a bus, and this cab was very close to me abt a feel or less, then when i finally stopped, he slammed his brake and honked, then came out of the cab and started shouting at me, and threaten to run me over. I told him if he does i'll call the police, and he threaten again. when the light turned green i gave way and he over took and swerved into me. I slaped his car and jumped out of the way, then he stop in my way and i had to go around him. he almost doored me and i slaped his door again to push myself out of the way.
he got back into the cab and started to gain on me in the roundabout, so i had to go into the opposit traffic and take a left to avoid him.

i had a very nice lady who saw the whole thing and gave me a number plate, but unfortunately the police said it wasnt a match,
YH24 HGT - this is wat we thought the plate was (though 24 is def. wrong as its nt one of the number in the current systems).
It was a London taxi with white talk mobile stickers on it!
IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO for me that would be great, im meeting the police tonite after work, i was quite shocked at the time and almost hit another car by trying to get away from him.

    any help is appreciated,
    thanks
    Kirk

  • Assuming that it is the 24 you have got wrong, the police could try the obvious numbers it would be. I think they should try YH54 HGT straight off. I can see how a 5 might be mistaken for a 2.

  • And I should add that I am glad to hear that you are OK. This guy's behaviour sounds unbelievably dangerous.

  • they tried that no hit either,
thing was he had a passenger too!

  • Could the '2' in that numberplate be a misreading of a 5? YH54 would be a late 2004 registration, won't see any 24 plates until 2024..

  • Ah, bit slow off the bat replying, but second all of the above.

  • Cctv?

  • tried both, im gona ask the police to request CCTV footage on old street and near the junction from my work, as when i got to work that cab stopped at the light there,
it was goswell road and old street

  • If you want CCTV footage, you are probably going to be more successful getting it yourself.

Go and look for CCTV cameras, and write Subject Access Request letters to all of the Data Controllers of those cameras.

If you leave it too long, the footage will all be recorded over. Be sure to mention to all of the DCs that you expect the footage to be saved and stored securely, as it may be used as evidence in civil and / or criminal proceedings.

It will cost you money - Sue the cabby for the cost.

  • yah on my way home tonite i will look for a camera, see if there are any possiblities, spoke to hsbc on the junction for the cabs number plate they arent sure if i can get some from there

  • blimey! one thing i dont miss about being out on the roads! hope you get some joy with the cops and/or cameras.

Would it be worth trying to obtain footage from the bus he was initially stopped behind?

If you know what time you stopped at the light you can probably ascertain which bus it was.

  • TW2's advice sounds like a good start.

Be ready for cabs to be driven aggressively. Most are not. Remember they are stuck in traffic, and you are not, all day - which can make them very angry people in a minority of cases. You can usually hear something in their revs behind you that tells you - if you can hear that is.

Glad you are unhurt even if in shock.

  • i just emailed tfl, asking for footage under freedom of information act,
i knew he was there as the traffic was stationary before me for a good 10-20 seconds before i got there. so i had all the time in the world to slow down,
im glad im okay too, scared the willies out of me tho, this guy was massive, and so was his cab..

  • Glad to hear you escaped unscathed, if shaken. Keep us updated with any news.

  • i just emailed tfl, asking for footage under freedom of information act,
You need to be asking for it under the Data Protection Act, not the FOIA - Have a google for "Subject Access Request CCTV".

You can use the FOIA to ask them for the location of all the cameras that they control and operate, and what the film / footage rotation time is.

  • great, thanks, the police i talked to on Saturday morning suggested if i want to pursuit this further, i need to contact the DVLA, as on cctv, there is more change of me appearing to have cause damage to the drivers car, as i did hit it, as well as no sound to prove that the driver was at wrong, and since i was not injured nor my bike damaged, i cannot pursuit this through a criminal offence towards the driver, so no i need to take this the civil way, which will cost time and money, and a lot of it, what should i do!
on the other hand tfl have reply saying they will process my request,

i also found cameras on the building next to the road and the security said that the police has to ask for the footage, but since i want to go the civil way, how do i ask them for the footage?

the police sound like bastards. he made a threat to kill you, that's a serious offence and they should follow it up. Whatever happens good on you for reporting it. I've had numerous run in's with cabbie scum like this and always let it slide due to a suspicion that nothing would happen.

  • Really hope this gets sorted and the Police take it seriously, I always use those roads and taxis drive like madmen!!

Good luck and glad your ok, I can see the headlines now..... 'CYCLIST STRIKES BACK'

  • haha, well the police said they will flag him in the system, but i srsly doubt that would do much

One time on Lordship Lane, a driver swerved into me (by mistake, but he was being an aggressive prick) then when I called him an arsehole he overtook me, swerved in front of me blocking my way and threatened to run me over.
I called the Non-Emergency number and told them about the threat and they said "well, to be fair, you did call him an arsehole". The guy on the phone was a cyclist as well, they just don't act on these sort of things.
I had a good time cycling home that day, as he was stuck in the traffic I caught him up and stopped to take a picture of his car, he went fucking mental. Dickhead.

  • fuckin hell, sounds awful, glad you didn't get hurt!

any chance you can find out where the cabbie lives from the number place? Maybe send him a copy of the CCTV on a dvd so he can have a look himself and maybe feel a bit of remorse

  • holy shit. good luck with this

really his passenger should have reported it too. s/he would have had his license and could have got his name too. so many people have no sense of civic duty or responsibility or compassion.

  • will need it! the police said the best thing to do next time is just dun do anything do talk, get his number plate, then if you have time sit under the cctv and call the cops
