getting more involved in womens racing?

Posted on
  • Hi,

I'm not a lady, but my girlfreind has been getting really into cycling over the past year or two, she really loves it and is getting quite good winning a few local events and generally riding well.

The thing is, almost all events seem to be very poorly attended (by women, anyway) and she wants to compete against more women, whether it be road racing or fixed gear or whatever. Are there any girls on here who can suggest any events that are attended by a decent number of the fairer sex? I'm trying to help her get more involved in competitive cycling but I dont compete myself and im struggling to find much info on anything to do with womens cycling.

    Thanks very much,

  • It's cyclo-cross season and I'm not really up on that but the Mule Bar Girls are probably a good place to start. They're an all girl racing team - track, road, cross, everything and run the female only track sessions at Herne Hill on a sunday afternoon and organised the all female velo jam meet at HH earlier this year.

Not sure how long/frequently the all girl sessions will run over winter given the HH redevelopment work but they ran up until December last year..

  • Hi there. Understand your girlfriend's frustration. Not sure where you live but Minet Park (Hillingdon) have ladies Time trials in the on season (from April I think). I haven't tried this myself but I go to bike coaching there and will be tempted next year.
