Harsher penalties for cylists all round. If you get caught running a red you should be made to take the tube for a week with a brompton.

Bring back the "stop, look and listen adverts"

I am 100% on the side of the pedestrians. They should have the right to wander everywhere without looking and we should have the skill not to hit them.
This is so moronic I have to take issue yet again.
By this logic, cyclists should be able to swerve all over the road, without looking and it's all other road users' responsibility to look out for them.
By this logic, drivers should be able to run red lights, swerve all over the place, fail to indicate and it's all other road users' responsibility to look out for them.
Nobody should have 'the right' to endanger others (directly or indirectly) by their own carelessness or selfishness.

Yeah i'm kinda hoping he was joking because its literally the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Scares me that people can think that way.

One thing Pedestrians should be called out for is mindless "drift" in shared spaces, usually caused by texting whilst walking.
-
• #4909
Ha yeah for sure. I know in victoria they usually have a community support officer on the busy junctions preventing pedestrians from just walking out. It 100% works too. But I cant help feel sad that it has to be that way and people cant just use some sense. We will end up with American style jay walking.

• #4910
jeez yeah, the old phone walking. How anybody can think strolling onto a 2 lane busy main road in one of the largest cities in Europe, with head phones on which block all noise, without looking once, is totally beyond me. But they have the right dont they. its fine. we just have to react and avoid them, even if we have 0.1 seconds to do so.
-
• #4911
And please do not say that you never endanger pets -
I once reversed a car over a dog and killed it. I have never forgiven myself. -
• #4912
Just let a dog reverse over yourself. Bit of payback and our faith in mankind may be restored.

• #4913
He's in jail for running a dog over. The dog had right of way.

How many times does this have to happen before you learn that it is going to continue to happen. Allowing yourself only 0.1 seconds is a major fail. The rules say you have to ride/drive at a speed safe for the conditions.
Just because the pedestrian is twat (*) doesn't give you the right to run them down causing serious injury or death. It doesn't change your responsibility to do everything practical to minimise risk. If you are riding for work then the Health and Safety act applies here.(*) pedestrians might not be twats, they could be confused, blind, deaf, drunk, in love, foreigners, etc

Charlie has a point. Although pedestrians obviously should have some responsibility for their safety, everyone else using the roads has a responsibility to try and make sure they don't injure someone guilty of nothing more than a brief lapse in concentration. This doesn't mean riding everywhere at 5mph, but it should mean taking care filtering through stationary traffic where people are likely to be crossing, and not riding through soho at 20mph within feet of people walking along the pavement.
I work near the junction of Charlotte St and Rathbone Place which is treated like a chicane and wince at the way people cycle through it using the fastest line. I'd go as far to say cyclists cause pedestrians much more danger than motorists. Whenever I cross the streets around here it's not cars I'm worried about.
This strict liability thing that gets drivers enraged - if ever introduced - would inconvenience a lot of cyclists if they didn't change their habits.

Charlie is right, and not just from a legal point of view.
I wouldn't bomb it down the road, right next to the kerb, it's simply irresponsible.
Jeez, do I ride 6ft out most of the time? Maybe not always 6ft, but generally far enough so that at the speed I'm going I have time to get out of the way of any pedestrians who are on the pavement, and might walk out.

Again all common sense. we know that. But sometimes, people do just walk out without looking and you cant do nothing. Plus, I dont have the luxury of waiting in traffic or crawling along, becuase my job requires me to get to places quickly. what you are saying is just obvious. But to say its right for a pedestrian to walk out without looking and its always there right to do so, it literally the stupidest thing ever. come on guys, go shoot yaselfs please. I need to know mankind is in safe hands for the future.

• #4918
my rule of thumb is we need to look out for the more vulnerable road users
you should be riding far enough from the kerb to give you a chance to shout at pedestrians who are strolling out (and you do have the choice in words used). rough rule of thumb is at least a car door's width away from the kerb, you will also find that in general drivers will then give you a similar clearance. this now gives you swerving options. also the further out you ride the greater vantage you have when you are passing parked vehicles so you have longer to see if there is someone about to step out
filtering at speed is dangerous when the rest of traffic is slow, conflict often arises when there is an unexpected great disparity between road users velocity

a car door width away from the kerb? are you serious??????? 99% of the time that is impossible in this city. come on, are you really that stupid aswell?

you can avoid the situation by riding at a speed and in a position where you can see more and safely react
i now have a bike with hydraulic disc brakes, i ride if faster than my other bikes in town, mainly because it can stop more quickly

herein lies your problem
-

Out of interest are all people complaining about peds stepping out saying they themselves have never ever stepped into a road less than fully aware?
-
• #4923
mate some of us need to be places quickly, its our jobs. most cycle lanes arent even a car doors width.
jeez, im out of here. cant deal with you lot haha. completey stupid. I bet most of you dont even ride fixed or singlespeed and you are members of the fluro, overpriced bike crew that get in my way and do stupid things like cut me up on the inside every morning and evening.

Where do you ride? (position and location)

anywhere theres enough space and my common judgement leads me. The be all and end all of this people is more common sense and less nit picking. While half of you do your 4 mile daily commute, im out riding for 9 hours solid everyday. I see a lot from everyside and a lot shocks me, including the complete lack of awareness some of you clearly have. like i say, MORE COMMON SENSE.
You write as if cyclists and pedestrians are two different life forms. And I think there lies your problem.
Less ignorance, selfishness and a little more responsible and considerate behaviour is the answer.
