Peugeot Tourmalet brakes question

Posted on
  • Hi

I am a total n00b and I'm building my first bike so I've ran into a pretty dumb problem.
In my ignorance I bought a Shimano BR-1050 brake set with leavers. The problem is it is a recessed Allen Key bolt type brake and it doesnt fit the bike.
My question is, what can be done about this? Do I need new brakes? What kind (and will the leavers I have fit them)? Can I fix it somehow?
For now, since I can not mount the brakes I will ride it as a fixie, but I would like to make it a SS.

  • Older frames had a smaller diameter hole for brakes. You just need to drill the holes to widen the hole a little. Isn't as daunting as it sounds, takes a cpl of seconds.

  • and both the front and rear brakes would fit?

  • just make sure you get the diameter right when drilling ! or you'll have the opposite problem

  • Yeah, that recessed allen key nut, you want the drill the diameter the thinner bit of that, so that'll fit and the lip will grip the back of the fork / bridge over the stays.

Best to just incrementally enlarge the drill bit until it's good, otherwise you could be in trouble as dicki said.

  • Locate the thread about drilling out frames for recessed allen nuts. You don't want to fuck it up.

  • If you dont fancy drilling you can also get away with putting the front brake on the back and the back on the front.....tightening the allen bolt on the inside of the fork (tightening it with your allen key through the back hole, just the way you like it ;) on the front and over the bolt at the back (might be best to use a standard bolt rather than the allen tightening thing provided).....these techniques have been approved by Sheldon Brown and I survived running brakes this way on an old peugeot frame for a couple of years.....
