The "overwinding" of mainsprings by autos was resolved back in the Fifties by most manufacturers. I guess that like 'overwound' hand wound watches this is one myth that will continue to run and run.
'Self Winding' is just marketing speak for an automatic. I see it sometimes on older watches (pre 1970's).
