Dogs at Herne Hill

Posted on
  • Hi, does anyone know if dogs are allowed in the velodrome grounds?

  • Remove their brakes and check their BB height.

  • There is a sign at the gates that says no dogs, but I have previously seen dogs on the grounds. I seem to recall RPM confirming the 'no dogs' thing, however.

  • Yeah, there is a thread somewhere with the dog discussion. Think it was a no-no.

  • IIRC a dog ran across the track fairly recently, during a training session (might have been juniors?) and this reinforced the "no dogs" policy.

  • Someone brought a dog along to Muddy Hell, which was a mistake.

  • Dogs are not permitted at Herne Hill Velodrome, for obvious reasons.

  • Other than the fear of them running across the track or at cyclists or barking suddenly and causing accidents or generally fouling the place, what possible reason could there be for not allowing dogs?

  • Saadat. Don't ask.

  • He should never be let off the lead in public.

Well, apart from the possibility of them causing accidents, generally fouling the place, attacking other dogs, attacking small children, affecting the venue's, coaches', race organisers' insurance and being of completely no need within a cycling facility. Nothing at all. HHV isn't a public park for the exercising of canines, there are plenty nearby which serve that purpose.

99% of people who ignore the signs and are told, have no problem and are polite. There is the occasional moron who argues but they are thankfully few and far between. Dogs have never been permitted on site since VCL mgmt took over in 2005 (and very possibly before that) however, some people have brought them in before and therefore are of the belief 'it must be OK', a similar logic to the belief that if you broke the speed limit on a stretch of road and didn't get caught, then it must be legal to do so again.

  • Plus, Dog Kennel Hill, which isn't far away, is a much more appropriate place for them.

  • since I regularly sprint round the park with my lurchers, I see a future with men on bike racing dogs. I want Herne Hill to be a part of that future. Who's with me?

    No-one? Oh well then
