The big switch-off; where has the street lighting gone?

This year, I think it's dimmer than usual.

Street lighting is on, but it's definitely less bright.

Actually feel the need to put the Lumicycle halogen lamp on the bike in addition to the LED dynamo light I have.

Is it just me who feels it is darker this year? Or rather... that the street lighting has been set to a dimmer level?

Or, is it just that time of year and it's me.

I'm still using my Supernova (370 lumens), but now have added my Lumicycle Halide to the mix (700 lumens).

I had this very same thought while cycling through bloomsbury last night, I dont think its just you.

Can 'they' really dim the streetlights?

I'm now imagining Boris with his hand on a huge dimmer switch - "let's make it sexy lighting, London".

Umm actually just realised I already did this.

Well, they could run less voltage through the circuits, which would dim the lights and save some energy.

So yes, if they had the circuitry in place to control this stuff they could.

Whether they are, I'm not sure. But in idle conversation it's come up a few times this year, and with money being so tight for local authorities (who light up everything except the trunk and major roads which is controlled by central government) it's not a stretch to imagine that they would.

They seem to be turning them on/off with aggressive savings in mind, perhaps now that they've realised the maximum potential of those savings they are actually dimming slightly too to make additional savings.

It's speculation of course, I don't know for sure.

Our street has been involved with lights off from Noon till 5:30am, they say that anyone who is in the street during this time with a tourch will be questioned.

Bloody hell, idle speculation on the internet turns out to be true shocker.

They'll regret it one of these days - the next pigeon that swoops down Carting Lane may be smoking a pipe or even a cigar which could so easily ignite the methane that must now be accumulating in Bazalgette's subterranean empire.

With all that massive saving, they could rebate us all and buy us 3000 lumen lights each, City streets well lit, all be it randomly depending on where we pedal - subterranean empires shake at the thought!!
