WAC! Not a very sensible man at all.

Jeesus! Imagine you had a trailer with a child. Or a long bike. Or a child following you on a small bike...

"I am now semi-retired which gives me time to perform my council duties and maintain my National Forest interest."
Perhaps we need to suggest he goes into full time retirement.

Let's plant a tiny forest behind his truck so he crushes that when he reverses it.
-
• #6
BTW his National Forest 'interest' is that he owns it.
170 acres of it, which he doesn't want to pay tax on:

Classic human fight/flight/denial behaviour.
He made a mistake, got himself into a situation but needs to shift the blame, however ludicrous it may seem.
Like the drivers' insurance claims which say things like 'I hit a tree which should not have been there' because it's impossible for them to freely admit guilt.

Why not quote the whole article?
Also way does the size of the pick up matter? Come to London to see the off roader that only sees dirt when driving past a park or road works.
Also may be add the party as that may be another area to discuss his ability to represent the people if that is his opinion.

Whilst the way the article comes across does not show the Councillor in a good light and certainly comments about heading to Switzerland for an assisted suicide are way out of line, I do agree with the sentiment of how invisible recumberents are to other road users. A recumberent is pretty much invisible to a car driver if alongside, let alone larger vehicles.
From a personal viewpoint, there is no way I would condsider riding one on public roads under any circumstances.
Oh and whilst I'm maybe making enemies, that picture of a pick-up is not representative of the size of the average pick-up truck found on the roads in the UK. -

As a car driver as well as a cyclist, I have no problem with recumbents and I'm sure it's the same for everyone.
If someone chooses to have a problem then that's up to them.... Councillor Stanton sounds like someone who shouldn't be on the road in any vehicle.

criticising Stanton for driving a truck is like criticising someone for riding a recumbent
He is a cunt for the way he drives and thinks -

Might have to weigh in here.
I ride a Fuego low racer every day in central Glasgow and on open county roads. I've never had a problem with not being seen - it's a massively visible, unusual vehicle that stands out in drivers' eyes. Yeah, if you filter you can be tricky to spot, but you learn that pretty quick and adjust your riding style to suit.
Leading with your feet is also a huge safety boost. They only incident I've had is a head on slow speed job with a BMW jumping a red light (deliciously ironic...). Pedal lodged in his bumper, but certainly better than pitching over the bonnet into the windscreen.
I'm aware I'm grumbling at the messenger here. Stroppy email time methinks.

That's a pretty dreadful article, the story there is "Councillor tells constituent to go to Dignitas", not his choice of bike. I feel for Srg. Todd, I bet he's long suffering...
The full article does mention the recumbent colliding with a tractor, without the full details we can't call that but the Cllr almost hitting him pulling out of his driveway was presumably a situation where the cyclist had priority, unless his driveway is a main road....
How do we do the SEO thing? Like this?
Councillor Michael Stanton is a cunt
Adroit is right though, the problem is his head, not his car.

Explain how the SEO thing works...

He is a cunt for the way he drives and thinksNo the point is that if you are going to criticise other people's choice of vehicle, then it's pretty much open season to criticise your own.

No because you fall into the same trap as cuntstanton

He also seems to fit the ford f100 truck purchaser.
As a car driver as well as a cyclist, I have no problem with recumbents and I'm sure it's the same for everyone.

I have problems with the operators of vehicles and never the vehicle.

From a driver's perspective recumbent = pram. If you can't spot either then you're a cunt.

Has anyone emailed him a link to this thread?

yep, i emailed him a link when i sent him a message suggesting he retires fully

perhaps someone ought to send him that google link instead

Better go easy, next time he might not brake...

Might be worth letting the council's standards committee know what you think of Cllr Stanton. Calling him a cunt is unlikely to cut much weight; suggesting he's bringing the council and his position as a councillor into disrepute might.
Finding a specific breach of the council's code of conduct for Members (appropriate, I know) would be even better - maybe clause 3(12), although that's wishy-washy crap about treating people with respect.

The Burton Mail tells us
A CYCLIST who travels around South Derbyshire on a high-tech bike will ‘kill himself or someone else’
Really?
*The man criss-crosses the roads around Repton on a recumbent cycle, *
Criss-crosses? This must be a pretty fucking high-tech bike to go sideways.
Or do you just mean 'The man rides a recumbent cycle in the Repton area'
where the rider pedals in a lying position, a configuration which is supposedly more comfortable and more aerodynamic than traditional bikes.
Supposedly? I don't think there's any supposedly about it.
The meeting heard the cyclist was routinely followed in a van by his wife, who filmed him ‘for his own protection’ because of the abuse he received from other road users.
So this man is being abused by other people and the Burton Mail apparently condones it? Where are the police to arrest these people?
Michael Stanton, who represents Repton on South Derbyshire District Council, said he had a close encounter with the cyclist when emerging from the driveway of his home in Ticknall in his pick-up truck.
So Cllr. Stanton drives a TRUCK.
In case anybody was confused, here's a normal car that normal, non-psychopathic people drive, pictured next to a pick-up truck:
In other words Cllr. Stanton has made an anti-social car choice that blocks people's view from behind and the side, and which evidently also makes him a fucking menace, since he admits, in public, that he cannot see other road users, something which is clearly influenced by the height of his giant truck.
Cllr. Stanton said:
“I was about to pull out when I noticed this wire going past the bonnet with a pennant on it, then I saw this fellow go past lying on his back in a cylindrical type object."
So you saw him ok.
“If it had been one second later I would have killed him. If he gets killed it probably serves him right, but the problem is, he may end up killing or injuring someone else."
It would serve him right? He deserves to die because you don't like his choice of transport?
He deserves to die because you choose to drive in a vehicle that you've admitted in public you can't see out of properly?
Councillor Stanton added after the meeting that the cyclist "risked killing himself or others and suggested he would be ‘better off going to Dignitas’ — the Swiss clinic which carries out assisted suicide."
Councillor Stanton, you are an utter, utter cunt.
Anyone in the Derbyshire should watch out for this man:
