if you have a scratch or small rusted bit i use nail varnish - also to protect newly applied decals. just my tupence worth!

What is GT85? I have a few bikes with little paint left and would rather preserve them as they look than repaint them so i could do with this stuff!

I'd like to clear powder coat this, but the frames still feels a little rough, will it polish up?
It's a pinarello, and I don't really want to have unprotected decals, so I should
clearcoat them -
• #105
Has it been shotblasted? Going over with wire wool will make it more shiny looking but you might struggle to polish it to a more reflective finish, if that's what you're after.

yes, it was blasted
I foolishly had it powdercoated a blue colour, but the powdercoat was so thick
a lot of the lugged looked ill defined.
I was tempted to chrome it, but cost are high, and the modern chromed finishes I've
seen aren't too clevercheers for the tip

how to get the color of my aluminium frame?
and do I have to mind anything special? can I ride a bare aluminium frame? or do i have to cover it in a clear coating at least?
cheers

UTFS (top right of the screen). Search for stripping and painting a frame etc.
You want to take paint off (not 'of').
:)

*colour.

Those won't work for paint.
I am disappointed in you Tiswas.

there is probably a thread related to this, but i would rather not drag old threads to the top and or put this in a un suited thread
i met a bloke outside waitrose this afternoon who happened to have a 50s falcon frame in his car boot exactly the same as the one i just sold to my friend that he was riding.
he showed us and explained how it'd been shot blasted and clear coated in something called POR 15, something which i think is used on vechicles and marine stuff which he got in a kit off the internet, not intended for use on bike frames, but in my opinion the frame looks absolutely superb and i was wondering if anyone knew anything about this?
he said he used to be into fixed gear bikes and had used this forum in the past, he said to keep an eye out for photos of his frame which in my eyes will make pure conversion porn(new thread maybe?) -

On LFGSS the idea is to bump old threads - that way, all the relevant information stays in the same place.
I did mention the stuff in this thread:
http://www.lfgss.com/thread15807.htmlI haven't used it - it's good to hear that somebody has successfully used it on a frame though.
Thread merge ahead?

I'm using boiled linseed oil. Re-applying a light layer once or twice a month with a brush. No major rust yet but winter is coming! fingers crossed.

so for a bike that'll be indoor use only, already part stripped... wire wool on Alu frame, followed by warm Linseed should be enough coating?
Could I almost get away with leaving bare, depending on conditions in the storage room between rides? (e.g. warm & dry vs cold & damp)
-
• #122
Oh definitely, linseed oil gives great protection. I did a couple of coats on my bike and used it all through the winter - not a trace of rust when I cleaned it up in the spring.
Leaving it bare would be okay in the house, not so much in the shed or garage.

• #123
nice one, cheers!

• #124
Blimey, this Linseed stuff is probably gonna spontaneously combust overnight according to the label. Must chuck rags & brushes outside later!

This thread is really useful for my latest project - apart from the fact that everyone who has used linseed oil seems to have broken links for their pictures.
Does anyone still have one to give me an idea of what sort of finish I can expect?
It currently looks like this:
And I'd be interested to know how the 'after' might look, and whether boiled linseed oil is good as a long-term weather-proofing solution.
I just read this thread as "Which Polish lager for my friend?". That is all.
