Critical mass is a bike ride that happens in our city and cities all over the world every last Friday of the month.

Critical Mass rides began in San Francisco in 1992 and rides spread around the United States and the world with over 200 rides taking place in 2006.

Critical Mass has no leaders, and no central organisation licenses rides. In every city that has a Critical Mass ride, some locals simply picked a date, time, and location for the ride and publicised it, and thus the ride was born. Critical Mass is an idea and an event, not an organisation.

it is a great way to meet other cyclists and to have a fun bike ride.

It is not a fast ride and often children come too, everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the bicycle!

We have some RIDE GUIDELINES that we drew up together in a mass meeting before critical mass in 2007, which are revised at April Critical Mass each year, these include:

    1. If the light goes on red as the ride approaches the lights we stop and wait for green.

    2. If the light changes part way through the ride getting through around 2 people per lane of oncoming traffic stop and cork the road. This basically means that they stand in the middle of that lane holding up their hand/ a sign saying 'thank you for waiting' so that cars will stop and let the ride stay together and go through the light safely. Thanking the drivers when everyone is through.. we are trying to get drivers onto bikes not to hate us!!!

    3. Slower riders and children and people with less confidence ride at the front of the ride and to the left hand side so that they can set the pace and help to stay together and also feel safer as they are less likely to be near traffic.

    4. We don't have a set route for critical mass, instead whoever is at the front at the time can choose where we go, so we take it in turns! just shout left or right or straight on in plenty of time!

    5. When the PEDESTRIAN LIGHT IS ON GREEN WE STOP (traffic light on RED) if the ride has to separate we shout/use walkie talkies to communicate to the front of the ride to wait. This guideline was added in April 2010 at the annual meeting before critical mass.

    6. FRONT RIDERS:
      a. The ride must NOT be on one same road for more than 10 minutes at a time
      b. You MUST stop regularly at lights (even if on green) to allow the ride to bunch up. The mass
needs to be dense enough that no car can penetrate it. THIS IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SAFETY OF THE RIDE
      c. You MUST allow children, less confident riders and the soundsystem to set the pace at the front of the ride.

  • This FRIDAY is Critical MASSquerede! Wear masks and come to the Massquerede ball at Pedal afterwards, where POWER FRAU DJs will be playing...

  • Came last month, was great! Will be there again tomorrow. My housemate and I are on the two roadies with homemade bullhorns, come say hi if you see us!

  • Is this still happening? I mean does the ride still happen on the last Friday of every month, which is tomorrow.

I can't make it tomorrow, but may pencil it in for the future.

    Matt

  • Yeah still happens. I always mean to go and then something always comes up. I havent made it to one in ages.

  • Cheers for that boss.

I might pencil in for the 22nd Feb. Just have to get a bike now :)

    Matt

  • They do make it a lot more enjoyable, although you do get the odd person on other forms of non-motorised, wheeled transport.

  • How about a nice surly pacer?

  • hoping to come along on the Famous Ken Chalson by then ..
nice to see you all down there.. what actually is on the agenda??

casual ride around town is it??

  • Passive aggressive ride around town going so slowly you'd overtake them pedalling at half speed on a polo gear. Also incapable of maintaining a bunch so it's always stringing out despite the low speed. Occasionally tries to take up two lanes despite not having enough people to justify it.

Did it once, never again. Agenda pushers not productive campaigners.

  • It's alright for a pootle and to meet some people.

  • ^^ This

  • The coffee bike dude is organising a Flash mob on Oxford rd this sat apparently.

Yep. Sounds like possibly a good way to raise awareness of the Oxford Road scheme.

With the Police targeting cyclists, the council paying lip-service road safety and reducing congestion, and TfGM constantly pushing cycle hubs no-one wants, maybe it's time for a bit of peaceful lawful direct action?

  • Are these still running?

  • Yep, Last friday of every month.
It's been a very long time since I've been on one though.

  • I only moved back up north a month or so ago so not been to any, would be nice integration into the local (ish) scene

  • That and polo obviously.

  • don't have a bike i can afford to use as a beater so polo isn't a good idea

  • what bike are you riding?

  • ATM a fucked Hybrid as i spent last month touring, end of the month ill have a new Paul Hewitt (new so don't wanna be bouncing it around in polo),Specialized Hardrock configured for XC, and a Inspired Fourplay Trials.

  • We have loaner bikes...
