Got a quote from Ryan, at Oak Cycles. Just arranging a day to pop down there to the big smoke. I realise that makes it an expensive repair, but he is highly recommended so it will be worth it. Also going to try and arrange a re-spray the day after(If Ryan can do the repair on the day) at Morley Brothers in Cambridge. Then the project will be well on the way, i want to take my time with the component side of things to get everything just right before deciding on the various touring related attachments.

I hate to says that the same isn't anything special to make the repair worthwhile, if you think he's too expensive, shop around, if you're looking for a ratty build, you can always ask for a simple repair work without the elegant tidy-up of the lugs.

Fair point, but i do want a proper job done as i intend to get the frame back to a decent state. I know it's not a fancy, rare or special frame but i like it and want to make it into a nice bike i can enjoy riding. Also, there isn't much in the way of frame repair options here in Cambridge.

I admire the commitment, although price is an issue. I have a lovely 60's French frame with Nervex lugs and in 531. Trouble is that the bottom bracketing totally stripped and it needs a respray. As such, no-one is interested in it. My advice is to spend little on this, much as you like it, the second hand market is littered with reasonable frames at cheapish prices. SJS cycles for the bottom bracket. Look at Sheldon Brown for advice, but good luck regardless.

Yeah, i'm commited alright, or is that needing to be commited somewhere with soft walls? Anyway, there is 'crack fox' on the forum, he's local to me and does brazing. Waiting to hear from him, should be cheaper as no travel cost.
Re. Your BB, there are ones you can fit to stripped threads. Also, i now have an imminent TV repair cost on my LCD telly, so even with payday this week i am in danger of being brassic. I think it's time to win the lottery!

Just bought these System Ex touring pedals with matching chrome steel clips and leather straps for £34 all in, from Derekcyclesonline. That would have been the cost of getting to and from London for the frame repair.

Crackfox is Harvey, another poloista and another nice bloke. I think he was away last week, dunno if he's back yet.

Cheers Chad, know about the self locking BB's although they have a mixed reputation. Pleased you've found local option for the brazing. I look forward to seeing this project progress.

Yep. I've left a message for him. I'm off climbing peaks in lake district this weekend. Maybe next week he'll be about.

As far as my BB goes, ill grease it up and reinstall before deciding to replace. Progress will be steady i'm guessing.

Update. Took stem and forks off. But after a long think and re-assesment I think this frame has had it. The rust is more than superficial, the seatstay repair and spray would cost nearly as much as a new frame. My touring project will continue, just not with this frame. I am a bit sad, but I have learnt a lot, especially to look closely before buying. Thanks for the comments. Watch the thread for the Tourer project when I get a new frame.
This is the one at SJS cycles, for £5.99
