Blue and white Fuji Track Comp 2009, 56cm. Bike is pretty much as described in the attached specification except that it has a Tiagra front brake fitted which is very easily removed for track use.

I bought this bike second hand and it was almost brand new- since then I have used it about six times at training sessions at Herne Hill. I have ridden it around Richmond Park perhaps half a dozen times also - always in good weather, never had a crash or fall etc. That said, however, apropos of nothing, the frame split at the seat post. I have spoken to Edwards Bike Shop and they reckon this could be patched by an aluminium welder for about £30.

The parts are pretty much perfect and the frame - except for the split! - is also in very good condition. In perfect condition I would ask about £450 for this bike, I suppose that I may well have to accept around £300 for it now.

I am happy to answer any questions and would be happy to let potential buyers view the bike first.

  • do you know the person who bought the bike new? fuji warranties are 2 years for frames but you still might be able to get this sorted by the manufacturer since a bike frame without accident should last many more than 3 years. this implies there was a manufacturing defect present when sold and therefore the purchaser may be entitled to some kind of repair/replacement.

if you dont know them - then sorry and i will shut up.

  • overtightened? this looks like one - no wouldnt fix as a manufacturer defect.

  • Hi, thanks for the replies - unfortunately, I can't return to Fuji for two reasons; the warranty lasts for two years and is only attached to the original purchaser, proof of purchase is also required, so the only way I might be able to do it is by attempting to bulls**t a Fuji dealer - but I don't want to do it. By the way, the guy I bought if from rides for a race team and the bike was part of a sponsorship deal that included trips to Newport Velodrome for training and racing. After two trips to Newport the funding was pulled and so he sold the bike to me - it was almost brand new. So he doesn't have the proof of purchase, and the funding company went bankrupt.
Just some thoughts and advice I have been given: apparently, the split by the seat post is fairly common and doesn't mean that other parts of the frame are defective - it is one of those things that can happen without there being any obvious cause. At the moment the bike rides perfectly - it is as fast as a whippet and, in my opinion, feels like a well tuned instrument, it is almost a case of hanging on while the bike takes you for a ride!
I had thought about putting a ring on the seat post just above the junction with the frame to avoid it slipping down in case the split gets any worse at the moment the seat post does not slip at all.
As mentioned earlier, Edwards bike shop in Peckham said that for £30 they could weld an aluminium patch on it which should cure the problem - this could then be painted white to blend in with the frame colour.
I would happily keep the frame if I intended to use it more, but I just haven't used it as much as anticipated and, whilst I like having it around the flat because it looks great, my other half is pestering me to free up some of my bike clutter.

  • Don't need, sort of want. You're in Peckham too then?

While we're on the subject, is Edwards a good LBS?

  • No, I'm in Putney - other side of London. As regards Edwardes, they supply quite a lot of bikes to Herne Hill and, as far as I know, they are independent, both plus points in my book - in addition, they are friendly, knowledgeable dealers ...so all in all, well worth checking out!!

  • I've always had positive outcomes from Edwardes, they even sorted out fitting my bikechain for free after my chaintool failed mid-fitting, and actually got stuck on the chain haha

  • That's really good to know, I'll get them to true a wheel for me. Thanks!

  • Could you post?

  • Hi, thanks for the reply. In theory I have no problem posting the bike, I would need to look into cost etc. Whereabouts are you based?

  • Might consider splitting if anyone is interested.

  • By the way, parts are generally in excellent condition.

  • Bump as an excellent looking bike

  • Thank you very much

  • Just a little nudge up the queue

  • If it can be easily welded then I suggest you get it welded.

You'll have more success selling a bicycle that has not got a crack in it I suspect.

  • Thanks for the comment but I totally disagree with you. I would much prefer to let any potential buyer see the damage and then decide what course of action they wish to take rather than cover it up and hope that it sells more successfully. As I said, I have been advised that it is very straight forward to fix and would cost about £30 and I have said which shop gave me that info - anybody can feel free to check with them - but ultimately if someone is going to buy a damaged bike then they need to know exactly what the problem is.
Just one other point I would make, the parts are good quality and in very good condition so if anyone feels like ditching the frame and recycling the parts please feel free to make an offer.

  • Lovely bike. Just curious, would you ship it to Portugal?

  • I don't think Dammit was trying to imply that you should hide the crack, just get it fixed. Personally if I was in the market for a bike, I would rather buy this from you welded than not. Obviously my opinion, play the field I'm sure someone will come along and buy this. I've got the track pro version of this of the same year and I love it.

    Good luck with the sale.

  • dont get me wrong ... I truly believe you can fix this ... or do I

regardless how you would try to convince me that this is safe I wouldnt wont to ride (not to mention to race) on the bike which had a split in the seat tube ... which was welded...

cant stop thinking it gives a way and I am going down on the bottom of the hill or while I sprint at 35mph ... unless you are into this kind of thing

  • What price everything BUT the frame ?

Exactly- I would certainly consider a frame that had been competently repaired whereas I would not consider one that was in need of repair- unless it was priced at the scrap value of the metal in question, and would therefore be worth the risk of purchasing in order to have it repaired.

If you wish to see the price that you are asking currently without making repairs then I would advise you to split the bike and sell the components, frame and fork etc.

  • Thanks for the comments and queries. In general, I am happy to post the bike anywhere but the costs would be added to whatever price was agreed and payment would need to be received first.
As regards splitting the frame and parts: I would not do it at this end, that would be up to the buyer - I only suggest this as an option that a buyer may consider when making an offer.
So please feel free to make an offer.
Finally, I have ridden the bike on the track a little while ago and it felt fine - so if anyone wants to try the bike, that may well be arranged.
    Cheers.

  • a little nudge back up the queue
