• So I'm an idiot and overtightened the drive side nut, shearing the hub nut in two. When I loosened the outer nut off it just fell out onto the floor in two pieces.

It's the dark grey piece here next to the track nut, with the parallel cutout and textured face that grips the dropout on the inside:

Is that thing replaceable or am I looking at a new hub and rebuild?

  • Replaceable. I bought a few from condor.
Should get em at most bike shops.

  • Whew - that's a relief.

  • ask for a rear hub locknut for a formula track hub. system ex and zenith are the exact same hub.
you can use any 10mm locknut anyway

  • Cheers ears. Found this thread: http://www.lfgss.com/thread35289.html now that I know what it's called.

  • I had a cracked locknut on my system x rear hub, for which I could not source a local replacement. My workaround was to buy a new pair of solid flanged hub nuts (couple of quid from ebay), then angle-grind them down to the same thickness as the cracked locknut. Or if you are already using spacers, then remove spacers and add the spacer thickness. Best way to hold them whilst grinding, is to screw them onto axle thread and metal-grind squarely. Lots of sparks, but worked for me, and they are much stronger than original. Keep solid flange side towards dropouts for final fitting.

  • I did the same with a Novatec hub. I got some replacements from the oddments box in my LBS for a packet of custard creams. I think they are from an XT hub.

  • Condor sorted me out. They have a stash of the buggers.
