The way I look at it. Trainers wear out. Cushioned tarmac running shoes at a pretty specific rate. Having more trainers spreads the wear, and can in fact reduce it, by having more suitable trainers for each type of running/conditions etc.

Asics DS trainer - Fast pavement runs.
Asics Kayano - Long pavement runs
Inov8 Roclite GTX - wet/cold trail runs
Montrail Leona Divide - Dry/hard surface trail runs
Both the trail shoes are well cushioned and supportive. Hence my desire for something lower and more flexible.
Or maybe I should get some studded jobbies. Near killed myself a couple of times last winter.
