    Great news.

Yes lets hope they get it through.

    We should all support this.

If we get Camden 20 mph we may get other boroughs to follow.

  • Would be lovely to see a 20mph limit on camden road, unfortunately the idiots that current do 40-50 as soon as it turns 9pm down there probably wont care

  • yes it would be lovely and very significant to get a borough to go 20 mph on all their roads...

    cant wait.

  • But Keith Peat, regional co-ordinator of the Association of British Drivers, said changing the speed limit was counter productive because "drivers who would have selected a slower speed naturally would now be more concerned about getting points and focussing on the speedometer instead of their windscreens, watching out for pedestrians and children".

    bwahahaha that's seriously weak.

  • Keith Peat. What kind of reasoning is that?

  • Given that the average speed of traffic in London is 9mph, what difference is this going to make?

  • Islington
    http://www.islington.gov.uk/services/parking-roads/street_improvements/Pages/20mph_limit.aspx

All side streets for the last year; am sure someone better informed than me can tell me of the effectiveness.

Amey - JD is a Camden stalwart.

  • I think it makes a difference. I ride through Islington every day, mainly on A roads with bus lanes. I dont see a noticible effect on those main roads, of having the side roads with a 20mph limit. And that 20 mph limit has been in place for a while. So if Camden are planning to enforce this (and key here is enforcement) on ALL roads, that would be beneficial. It would certainly encourage me to take my 9 year old out on the road, rather than have her on the pavement (Daily Mail readers feel free to flame me with how she's a law breaking lycra lout, RLJ'er, etc, etc)

  • I may be being cynical, but to me it just smacks of cheap grandstanding- "we are demonstrably good people due to our safety agenda", but without the will, and the requisite funding, they're empty words.

London traffic, we are told in just about every study, averages 9mph, so an average speed camera system will be no good- so you need either a massive increase in the number of traffic coppers (which would be great and I'd support 100%) or they'll whack up a load of fixed camera points, which people just treat like any other traffic calming measure and speed up to, haul on the brakes, then accelerate away from.

  • i.e. the only result is a net increase in pollution, paid for via council tax.

  • ^ Be practical. Every car gets a Strava account. If you go over 20 miles monies will be deducted from your account. If your account is empty car will get impounded and destroyed.

  • So what you are saying is that this is a plan designed to make people buy iPhones?

  • shit now popo will start to pull me over

  • ^ Be practical. Every car gets a Strava account. If you go over 20 miles monies will be deducted from your account. If your account is empty car will get impounded and destroyed.

would have to burn all the trees though. Wet trees = gps glitches, we'd all be skint in no time

  • Does this mean we have to cycle at under 20 too?

  • That shouldn't be too hard for most forumites.

  • But when your in a rush don't you push over that by a bit?
I know I did when I had the cycle computer and I'm sure I still do.

  • Speed limits only apply to vehicles, bikes aren't consider ones.

  • ^this is sort of true. Bikes have no speedos so cannot be expected to stick to a speed.
20 mph is good though. It is already applied in some boroughs where calming measures help enforce it, Islington, Lambeth, hackney, southwark. It should apply in all places where people live and shop. Equating speed of road users makes it easier to ride centrally in the lane with drivers feeling they've got to overtake..

  • ^this is sort of true. Bikes have no speedos so cannot be expected to stick to a speed.

when you're busted for speeding, pleading ignorance is not going to win you any favours. You'll be slapped with an ots fine regardless.

  • I've only just seen this. The 20mph limit has been agreed for Islington...

  • You never stop learning, so Holloway Road and Upper Street are managed by Transport for London and not Islington Council?

  • Will this 20mph limit be enforced?

  • ^this is sort of true. Bikes have no speedos so cannot be expected to stick to a speed.
That's incorrect. Legislation defines what vehicles / carriages that speed limits apply to. It is not specified that bicycles are vehicles / motor vehicles for the purpose of speed limits*.

The fact that bicycles do not have speedometers is irrelevant.

    • In some Royal Parks, this is a little more ambiguous, and as yet untested.

    Pretty much this.
